Wing Commander: Saga - Fan made game released

Without moaning at the people who run this forum, this is how games should be made. Attention to detail with the fans involved from the start, a perfect recipe. Tbh it could have gone either way but i'm glad to report it's a great piece of programming. In these days where interacting with developers is the norm, to NOT involve an active fanbase would have been suicide for this project. Ring any bells?

I downloaded this the other day and i have to say it's exceptional. Yes it uses the Freespace 2 engine, which is actually perfectly suited to the WC genre as that was mission based with cutscenes. WCS is the same format, it's fan made with excellent graphics, ship models, acting, detail.

I cannot fault it, a truly remarkable piece of work and the authors of this deserve a medal of some kind.

WC Saga is excellent! I've always loved the WC games.. and this is the best in the series this far.

A Space Sim Too Good To Die

The Elite series will always be number one for me, but I do still have a lot of respect for the WC games and downloaded it too as well as what is on GOG, 1.2 & III. A great series! :) On many forums its getting good coverage and is demonstrating there is still massive interest in Space Sims. Build it and they will come ;)

And yes Gibbon, I do agree with everything you said in your last post :D

I'm not trying to be awkward either Geraldine, but there are lessons to be learnt from the approach used by the Saga guys, i can also add Egosoft to that category as well as other fan driven games with tonnes of input from the community.

With DB and Frontier who knows tbh, IF they make the unmentionable, will they consult the community or just give us what they think we want and hope for the best? Either way, not holding my breath as i'm totally convinced that after all these years it's not going to happen now, loved to be proved wrong mind you. Personally i'd prefer a simple, 'yes we are', or 'no we're not making it', either way an answer i can accept and deal with accordingly, it's the up in the air approach i find so ridiculous and childish.

With regards to any fan based derivatives of any popular game, these are normally created by ardent fans with good attention to detail and if they can actually code well, the results are sometimes as good if not better than some of the original versions. I certainly rate WCS as equal to the originals, but there are other games being developed like Pioneer which also prove my point not to mention numerous mod makers like myself who create things as well. On a parting note, WCS had over 50k downloads on the day of release!

There has been an explosion of space sim/games over the last year or so, all of it is coming from the smaller PC/ indie developers as well as the mobile deves. Then there all the free games out there. It’s a game genre that is far from being dead as you often read on game forums.
Looks more like it’s making a strong recovery, maybe one of them will hit gold as that's about the only thing which will convince the major developers to do something.

Did David Braben and Ian Bell consult with us about Elite in 1984? Did David consult with us about FE2 and FFE in 1993 and 1995? No. And that's the way it should be, IMHO.

That's very true Steve, but times and expectations from a very knowledgeable fanbase, have moved on. In my view, it would be remiss of Frontier not to use that resource. The massive "Ideas For Elite IV" thread is not only a collection of wish lists, it could serve as a starting point for game design doc.

Again I would say community involvement would give us a better game at the end of the day. Elite IV must reach the parts other space sims are too afraid to reach for.

Keep The Faith!

An opinion i respect but cannot agree with Steve. As Geraldine says, things have moved on, this is the 21st century now and to not involve the fanbase on a project like E4 would be a criminal omission imho, based on my thoughts of earlier. We however digress, as these comments are for other threads of the same calibre.

Back on topic, download numbers are now easily into six figures for WCS. This is a free game people, let's not forget, made by fans, for the fans. I rest my case.

I made a thread on this not realising there was already one on here, my bad. Yes I love the WC series very much and even have the WC3 & WC4 fmv movie edits someone put together to make watchable films.

When that italian cruise ship went down last year I posted on my facebook page "first the tigers claw and now this." only one person in my friends list got the refrence. If there are any hardcore WC3 gamers on here you will get it too.

There was always one quote from Wing Commander 3 that has stayed with me forever...

"god, I love that kids spunk." - Captain Eisen

Just in case you've missed it, the Wing Commander saga will continue, Chris Roberts is back! The reports of his demise were indeed exaggerated.

*** Attention all hands, this is not a drill! ***

Roberts Space Industries are looking for a few good men (and women)!

Do you have what it takes to become a Star Citizen? The time to join the fight is NOW!

It's now or never guys. Hope to see you all there soon! ;)
