Wing Trading?

I have seen a lot of stuff on combat with wings but not a lot on trading with wings. If my friend is no where near me can we form a wing? Can I trade my route, he trade his, then we share profits? Do we have to fly the same trade route to share the profits? What if only I did the trading and he flew escort, would he get some of my profit for helping? It would be nice to be able to take a new commander who is low on funds and help out by wing trading and letting him get some of my 432 ton profit versus his few ton profit.

you can create a wing in any system, but to receive trade profit in wings you have to be in the same system as the seller at the time of the sale, also I understand there is a bit of a bug at present that seems to affect profit sharing if both are docked and in the starport services, justbeing on the pad but not in starport services seems to fix this issue at the moment.

Maybe there is something I'm missing here, but what is the point of trading in groups? I mean, the only benefit I would see is if you are playing in open and want an escort to deal with interdictions- in that case, you would share with your little friends.

However, why would I want to trade as a part of a group with anyone else in say, solo?

I think I know the answer here (that wing trading is really a mechanic to get traders from solo into open by giving them escorts), but any way you slice it, you are either having your profits cut into by evening out your overall trades with smaller freighters than you own in your wing, or giving money away to your escorts for protection.

Unless they have added super-aggressive interdiction tactics by NPC wings into solo and nerfed my T7's engine speed and FSD recharge times (thereby requiring I have fighter escort to survive), I just don't see the point of trading in groups- at least not in the game as it is currently.

My thinking is I already have enough money, have a great ship, outfitted the way I like, millions in the bank, the only thing I keep trading for is to reach elite status. I've seen beginning commanders state how difficult the game is to start out with so why not share some of my wealth with those more needy. I have to do the trading anyway to reach elite so helping out someone new would be fun for both of us. Get the newbie into something better sooner and give me something else to do besides just fly and land.

Why do real truckers go in convoys? Besides saving fuel due to drafting, they do it for the camaraderie.

Why did real ships in WWII travel in convoys? Safety in numbers. That U-boat will only target 1 of the group - the rest will survive. So on average, you do better. So if you're wing is in SC, only one guy will get interdicted. He'll likely get away anyway, but at least the rest of the group isn't inconvenienced. If there's a fighter for escort, they can easily pop in to help.

Another in game reason is the 5% profit sharing. Let's say I'm doing my favorite run in my Type 6 with 3 other guys. I make about 1 million an hour. I get an additional 15% from my 3 friends, so 1.15 million. Nice tip for each of us.

Ahhhh, I didn't know about the 5%- must have lost it somewhere in the 1.2 release note mountain! Thank you- rep deserved!

The 5% profit sharing then, combined with trading between 2 stations with enormous (not quickly exhausted) supplies of goods (able to keep hungry Type 7/9 freighters satisfied) in a wing of 4 could really make sense. I'll DEFINITELY have to try that out.
