Wings and Things........... (yes, it's a rant)

[RANT]
Did a go-fetch wing mission with a friend today. Got kicked off (lost connection") after two jumps. Got back into the game and the comms panel says "wing invitation received". Ok, but there's no "wing invitation" from him for me to "accept".

We tried this back and forth several times. He doesn't get mine. I don't get his.

Logged out to desk top. Back in. Now it works. He re-sends the mission to me and we're all set to continue.

Kicked out to menu again. Same problem: he re-sends wing request, I see it in comes as "a wing invitation has been received" but there's nothing to click on to accept it.

Seems the only thing to do if you're on a wing mission (or just winging up with someone for combat missions, etc) is that if you lose connection, you have to go all the way back to desktop (launcher), wait five seconds, then click "play" again in order for the invitations to come through.

Seems like a funny way to run an airline to me.

Thank you for listening to me rant. You know I don't rant very often.
Hope this gets fixed eventually.

Have had this happen a few times. My workaround is to have all parties log to the menu, wait a minute or so, and log back in. Has been pretty reliable for me.

Happens to me a lot. I also get a Comms issue where I can't receive wing Comms but can recieve local and direct. Have reported it but then I've also reported the NPC magic FSD thing and that's not fixed either.

Still, we can at least blow up harmless rocks we find with our radio tuners :D

Have you both set wing beacons to on?

Interesting suggestion. I'll give it a try. I did try it on MY end but that had no effect on the problem. I'll suggest we both do it and see if that makes a difference the next time the problem comes up.

I listened to your rant... no wait... I mean I read your rant...

You're welcome

Here's mine... thanks in advance...

Had this a few times latly.
I guess what happens here is this:
When you're winged up, the clients of the wingmates continuously send status signals to each other. If someone logs of gracefully he send a disconect message and the other client knows he's gone.
If you get a disconnect, you are gone but the other client still waits for a lifesign. If this doesn't come he will run into a timeout after a while.
Now if you reconnect before this timeout happens, then your client is not in a wing, but the other client thinks you are still in there. Then you send a wing-invite, the other client thinks: Okay, an invite...wait a moment... I'm already in a wing with that guy. This can't be right, I'll just pretend I haven't seen that.
And then you have a situation where cmdr x is in the wing with cmdr y, but cmdr y is not in a wing with cmdr x.
My best workaround: everybody relogs. Reloging fixes everything. Reloging is the solution for all worlds problems. And if that doesn't help: restart, thats just a like reloging but bigger, and bigger is better. Or reboot. Rebooting is the mother of all relogs

Not sure this qualified as a rant, as it's reasoned and actually true. Better try again OP, this time add in more misunderstanding of the game, and preferably random (or all) caps. And exclamation marks ;)

Happens to me all the time as well.

For me the behaviour is simple...

If I get a disconnection of any kind, I will never see anyone again (in Open) until I fully restart the game. It's like getting an error puts you in some kind of other instance category or turns off parts of the netcode.

Your rant is well received and understood. :)

Thanks for the feedback. I did notice, now that you mentioned it, that I forgot the necessary 2 tons of salt. I'll try to do better next time.

Yup, this seems to be the most excellent technical explanation of what I was experiencing and yes, both the original sender of the wing request and I were both experiencing occasional disconnects.

I guess the only thing is to either (1) fix to disconnect issue or, failing that, (2) just log completely out to the launcher and log back in. I doubt #1 is going to ever happen so I'll stick with #2 as a solution if I'm ever in a wing again.
