Just flew a great session with a fellow commander (python and vulture) in a high combat zone. I tended to bring my firepower to his targets and so spent a lot of time in "select wingman" then "select wingman's target" on my joystick buttons. So here's a suggestion:
Wing commander double tap
Thoughts?
Wing commander double tap
- The button used to select a wing commander will, if pressed again, perform an action on that selected wing commander
- This uses three key or joystick binds instead of 5
- No need for a timeout as the key can't be rebound or re-purposed
- A "double tap" has good muscle memory
- In combat (weapons deployed) the action is "select wingman's target"
- Out of combat the default action is also "select wingman's target"
- If the wingman is charging for supercruise/hyperspace then the action is "jump with wingman"
- Can be extended as other wing context actions are added
