Hi all. Moderately new here. I made my first little expedition by leaving the bubble and going to Witch Head. I can totally see why people pour hundreds of hours into this stuff. Anyway, I had a few ranks of Federation reputation before leaving but none in Alliance or Empire, which seem to be the only two factions out in Witch Head. Each station I've traveled to in the nebula seems to only offer missions beginning at friendly or at least post-neutral reputations for Alliance or Empire, which I do not have. Is my only option to find a contact to donate to either of those factions or to go back to the bubble and grind rep? It's not the end of the world if I don't get missions, but it would be ideal if I could. Apologies that this might not be in the best board for this type of issue.

The mission reputation gate is for those specific factions offering the missions, not for the superpowers as a whole. So "grinding rep" back in the Bubble won't help much with you gaining rep out there, as they are different minor factions.
The three superpowers started out in the WItch Head Sector equally balanced in terms of numbers of systems, stations and factions. That the Federation has become de-facto locally extinct is due entirely to the actions of the players who have travelled out there.
My only recommendation is to take whatever crumbs the factions offer you in terms of missions, and do some bounty-hunting or (perhaps even better given the location) hand in exploration data. They love that. A single page of exploration data (50 scans, worth about 5 to 10 million credits), ought to get you up to instant Allied status witht he faction owning the station you hand it in to.
