With all the talk about death at neutron stars…

… last night was scary. The one time I don't look at the jump destination type, I see that nicely J.J. Abrams'd glare at the end of a tunnel and start clenching. Luckily I came up nice and safe. On the next jump, the notification says "type DCV"; having no idea, but being satisfied it's not "N", I make the jump and again stare into the evil glare of doom. Having now learned that those are white dwarfs (dwarves?) , I check the galaxy map with some filtering and notice that I've jumped into a huge field of non-sequence stars :O

So once the fix for the jump safeties is in, I will have to re-visit that bookmark :D

If you think that's clench-worthy, I've had the dreaded "Connection Error" several times when jumping *away* from a White Dwarf. Getting respawned inside its flare and then frantically trying to supercruise away has led to more than a few changes of underwear...

I've been dropped inside a cone once during beta and got out without major problems, but I'm still avoiding them for now. My own stupidity is damaging enough, dumb stuff like hitting the repair button for thrusters while in supercruise (cost 6% hull).

Exactly the same has happened to me. Didn't look, saw the damn thing approaching, was immediately in its grasp. Luckily all that happens was it dropped me out of supercruise. Took about 15 frantic seconds to select a star to jump to in a direction away from the neutron and managed to get away. Cost me a heat sink and a big cleaning bill - I have a fair amount of exploration data I could really do with getting back to Colonia.
Now all my routes are avoiding WDs and neutrons.

You also need to be aware that you can find yourself in the cone of one of these even if the galaxy map and the hud tell you the star you are jumping to is something else. If the Neutron or WD is a companion star of the one you are supposed to arrive at, you will arrive at the Neutron/White Dwarf instead.

I am not sure how common this is but I jumped to an Orange giant yesterday and arrived one million ls away from it in the cone of its companion White Dwarf. Fortunately I was able to gingerly escape from that one but as I have already lost an Anaconda by arriving in the exclusion zone of a White Dwarf, I was a touch nervous :)

I can confirm that sometimes Neutron Stars can be deadly. I was bouncing happily between them with a 15ly capable T6 in an effort to get home from Colonia (don't ask, I foolishing sold modules I shouldn't have sold). I hit lots of neutron stars escaped numerous glancing landings, then suddenly, BLAM! Landed on the stream dead on. Could not avert. I was knocked out of supercruise, was unable to escape even while boosting back into supercruise and eventually my puny hull was torn apart.

I'm still going to use the Neutron Star highway for short term endeavors (such as sprinting the neutron star highway in a higher fsd capable ship), but definitely going to avoid them for long term expeditions from now on.

I scouted 50+ Neutron stars around Jaques. Never had an issue.
The Neutron Gods are kind to me.
Maybe because my CondaXpis blue :p

Were you travelling on a straight plane? My poor encounter happened as I came in from a star above.

Through a mixture of greed and lacking attention, I went through maybe 5–10 D stars which were all harmless. I seem to be out of the neutron star cluster for now without taking any damage, so that's good :)

No, I was jumping back and forth, up and down.
Only once or twice I touched the stream upon arriving. I got some minor shaking and managed to escape.

I suffered a near fatality at a Neutron due to landing in the flare and being not skilled enough to deal with it.

Since then I've been practicing flying into neutron flares and have managed to successfully evade about half a dozen flare landings. There were a few key things to do: Not panic, have already zero'd throttle, have a key bound to targetless-SC-engage (just in case). Then it was a case of just pointing away and thrusting out (while managing the severe buffeting).

Now they're safe, I'm actually going to miss them a little bit. No more elevated heart rate upon arrival :)

Can anyone confirm that White Dwarfs got the same treatment in today's patch?
Also I hope "Fix for client and server disagreeing about whether a jet cone boost is active and kicking the player" Is the fix for disconnects in NS / WD systems and then spawning back in the cone on log in?

I'm still Leary.

Anybody done some tests?

Thanks

Well Edit to add:

It looks like the disconnect issue is still there [sad][sad][sad]

I've been through several neutron stars but no WDs since the update and reliably arrived at a very safe distance in a very safe position, but I didn't try to boost.

And you obviously didn't get disconnected either.
I've seen a 2nd bug report from another commander today.

Yeah, there's one in the bubble. Shows up as an M class star, but I jumped in at the white dwarf companion. Luckily I was nowhere near the streams. Can't remember what system. But I have to make the same trip I last encountered it soon, so I'll probably see it again.

Went through another 6–8 "D"-class primaries with jets without even trying to find them, always ended up very safe, never had a connection issue in 50+ jumps.
