With Chapter 4 out, has Frontier turned over a new leaf?

The way I understood it, the Beyond chapters were meant to be somewhat of a positive change in direction for Frontier, at least when It came to Elite Dangerous. More depth was supposed to be added and they were going to stop making the same mistakes over and over. Again, this is how I understood it. Personally I saw beyond chapter 4 as a fresh start for myself. I'd quit playing for the most part due to several reasons but after I saw what was coming in Chapter 4, I thought this was finally going to be the time I committed to the game.

Due to being so busy with work and such, I haven't played much but what little I did play and experience of Chapter 4, I enjoyed ( I even posted about it). We're only talking a few hours though. When I look through these forums I see a similar pattern to the complaints about most of the other major updates to this game. I can't help thinking that history is repeating itself. I found the posts about the skybox tinting to be particularly disheartening.

With all that said, do you all believe this is a fresh start for Elite Dangerous? Do you have confidence in the future of the game or do you see this update as more of the same (same missteps, that is) ?

Frontier have listened to the community that's all.

I believe they have a good vision for Elite but game development in 2018 isn't the same as it was in 2008 or 1998. Multiplayer games are hard to make everyone has different ideas, different specs and different expectations for what they pay money wise. The thing is David B has great ideas but you cannot account for technical issues or things like player community driven actions like station bombing or exploiting bugs or other games on the market.

ED had a great solo/single player experience but multiplayer was defiantly lacking for those who don't PvP. I'm sure the streamers who were invited to view Frontier HQ voiced what the fans were saying and this is why we got squadrons, BGS improvements and lots of new coop missions. I'm sure we're going to get space legs as that with atmos planets are the two most shouted about features. If you want to keep your game alive and doing well listen to it's core fans. Atmos planets are a hard challenge but I believe the cobra engine ED uses already has the foundations for space legs/first person mode, plus we keep seeing subtle changes in game like floating ships that look ready for boarding and interior graphics changing in our ships... plus they added commander creator a while back.

Long live ED well done Frontier!

The last year or so has been strong for this game and I reckon 2019 will be its best yet! Like all MMO games the features that come 2-3 years after launch are always what we wished we'd have had from day one but you have to get product to market to survive.

No. By logic, the game is a product of frontier and their development character, frontier aren't being whipped around by the game they have made.

This is natural and also has been proven many times over via handling of community issues (the only scope the game has to turn around and influence its maker).

The skybox tinting is a simple trick to give different systems a different feel, its a good addition.

I actually like a lot, what we got with 3.3. I have played a lot since the update hit, a lot more than usual and i pretty enjoyed every minute. I went out exploring, testing the new scanner mechanics down to the point by tagging roughly 600 systems and mapping the most valuable worlds i found. Mining will be next. Overall i can say, the game elements got much more connected to each other. In game information is much more present and player actions tie more together now.

So have Frontier turned a leaf? Hopefully, they do what they initially imagined as that is, what makes a game unique and puts heart and soul into it. So far Elite delivers on that point and i really hope, that they don´t give in too much, to the constant ranting and pushing by the so called community.

For me, i am pretty eager to see, what chapter four has to offer, regardless of what it will be – more content and game mechanics are always welcome, regardless if it is something for me or not.

Smoking leaves, perhaps. :)

Just curious, what is your source that this is intended and not a bug or graphics issue?

Livestreams talking about it I would imagine - I've certainly seen them discuss it, and not in an 'Oh, that's broken' way (like they did with the Mamba heat issue when they took that out for a spin).

Much like stigbob I like it, especially as it gives planets a different vibe when you land.

Well I have still yet to see a source that confirms it. Even if it is intentional, it is so Heartbreaking to see a game that makes scientific accuracy so important, especially when it comes to the galaxy itself, just throw it out the window when it comes to lighting. A major reason why many of us like and love this game is because of the care for scientific accuracy. Changing the color of the galaxy because it gives a different vibe seems like the antithesis to this game. Just look at this video and tell me that tinting the skybox aligns with that. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QuwRgaLBddc

There are both complains and praises. People who like the game most likely won't spend time on forums defending or praising it. That's the nature of the beast.

Some people like moaning on about everything looking the same FDEV add visual variety and people moan on about that. Doesn't mean the games broken its just mood lighting.

It is also a game. And game that wants to look cool. I fail to see how it is a bad thing, considering that final product looks very nice. But to each to his/her own I guess.

Complaining about scientific accuracy of the skybox in a game with faster-then-light travel and aliens?

[weird]

It has been confirmed many times that it is intended visual effect. Tinting from star has been mentioned as part of graphics update package in first stream imho.

Would you or anyone care to provide a link to a stream or a post that mentions tinting the galaxy is intended. This isn't a rhetorical request, I would genuinely like a source :)

If you watched the video I put in that comment, you likely wouldn't have brought up the faster-than-light travel since David Braben addressed it. Also, in regards to aliens, Braben stated he wanted them to be scientifically plausible. Asking for scientific accuracy when possible is consistent with this games philosophy and history. Surely you can understand this.

Why don't you source it being "broken".

I never claimed that it was "broken" in the sense that it is unintended. It is scientifically inaccurate but I have no idea if it is intended or not. I am completely and 100 percent open to being shown that that is indeed the case. I am not asking for a source out of hostility, I am genuinely looking for confirmation. Since I have not made a claim one way or another, I don't have a burden or proof :)

youtube.com/elitedangerous - I already watched them so I'm sure it will be more fun for you to watch :)

Not sure why you would bother though - you've decided you don't like it, so I doubt that seeing FDev say it was deliberate would change your feelings <shrug>
