All this talk of how best to implement a ship transfer service into the game and the simple answer is staring everyone in the face. Works well into game lore as well.
NPC pilots & crews.
Why is a "ship transfer" service necessary if we can hire NPC crew(s) to fly the ship(s) there for us? Solves the whole "time" problem since transit time is whatever amount of time it takes an NPC crew flying 24/7/365 to reach the designated destination. Add a few (15?) minutes delay for "paperwork" and "vessel prep" so short transfers will take slightly longer. Simplifies the entire concept.
It also ties into the storage issue: Simply allow CMDRs to transfer/store stuff in a ship other than the one he or she is currently flying. Want storage? Buy a ship, park it somewhere, outfit it with cargo racks and store . . . stuff . . . in it, until needed. Want more storage? Buy another ship! Want it moved? Hire an NPC\pilot to move the entire ship for you if you want! No instant material transfers that way!
You're welcome.
