General / Off-Topic Withnail and Cody's Test Cricket Returns! Thread (HOT ASHES)

As we had the Wimbledon thread and cheered Andy Murray on I thought it would be worthwhile to have one for the Ashes! :)

I am off to watch the first day tomorrow. Luckily the Jury Manager at the court where I was doing my jury service has discharged me and I can now go. Must be a cricket fan.

Is there any interest in Cricket on this forum (no this is not a reference to a Douglas Adam's book)?

Personally I think we are going to stuff the Aussies but you never know. Are there any Australian cricket fans here? :p

I'm an avid TMS listener - have been for decades. I cruise the spacelanes to the sound of willow on leather.

Same here. Sky does not really cut the mustard for me.

Really looking forward to the atmosphere in the ground tomorrow. I have only been to London tests before so it is going to be an interesting day.

Cloud cover tomorrow so may want to bowl.

avid cricket fan and i agree TMS commentary has always been the best, and I will be watching from here in the states....just dont ask me how ;)

Used to score using the Bill Frindall method and was brought up to the sound of John Arlotts lawn mowers and Brian Johnston's buses and half empty gas holders.

Raring to go - just waiting for Ashes 2013 on the PS3 to arrive.

Ashes? As in the remains of a camp fire? Crickets? As in the insects that we should be eating nowadays as the food sources in the world are failing?

Well it wasn't the best day of test match cricket even though we ended on a high note.

It was cloudy all day and despite an initial poor 4 overs from Siddle he looked the pick of the bowlers all day. He managed to get the ball to swing and therefore I maintain that we should have bowled first!

Our batting was not up to much really. Lots of poor shot selection and not enough concentration.

It was surprisingly cold the whole day and I thought the crowd was quite subdued. There was some good banter, especially around the Australian decision to refer a ridiculous appeal, and also some games with a beach ball that the stewards eventually confiscated. (Lots of booing for this, which added to the fun)

This game could go either way!

Good start this morning.... The pitch started to do what it threatened to do (crumble more than a crumbly biscuit that's been dried to be even crumblier).... and then what do we do? Let them get 100+ more after a cracking few overs from Jimmy :(

I have to confess I know nothing about cricket... I just can't get into it at all.. I even tried Battrick.org (online cricket) to see IF i could get my head around it..

I find it too slow, BUT as I aknowledge I know nothing... I am here to learn.

Anyone have a Laymans explaination of the rules??

I'm not a cricket fan (tbh I think the game is boring and should be scrapped)
But because my good friend Psy (Mr Kow to you) asked, here are the simplified rules of cricket:

http://www.melcarson.com/rules-of-cricket-simplified.html

You have two sides, one out in the field and one in.

Each man that’s in the side that’s in goes out, and when he’s out he comes in and the next man goes in until he’s out.

When they are all out, the side that’s out comes in and the side that’s been in goes out and tries to get those coming in, out.

Sometimes you get men still in and not out.

When a man goes out to go in, the men who are out try to get him out, and when he is out he goes in and the next man in goes out and goes in.

There are two men called umpires who stay out all the time and they decide when the men who are in are out.

When both sides have been in and all the men have out, and both sides have been out twice after all the men have been in, including those who are not out, that is the end of the game!

There are probably things you love that other people find boring; should they be scrapped also? If you don't like the game, no one's forcing you to watch it.

Topic: Bloody hell, England - why do we always do this? We had them dead and buried and let them off the hook again.

Anyone have a Laymans explaination of the rules??

Skimming over the rules isn't enough - you have to watch the game for quite a while to fully understand everything.

Uh ... I don't watch cricket for the reasons stated

And I accept that there are things I like that others don't like ...
but when it comes to cricket, honestly, watching paint dry for 12 hours is more exciting :p

Clearly you've never had a cricket ball whistling around your ears at pace. :)

Or never watched a fighting draw on day 5. If you don't follow cricket you wouldn't realise that a draw could be the most exciting outcome. :)

I hope today provides a better outcome for us, yesterday was a very strange day!

I much prefer the one day version or 20-20 cricket, but mainly because I like to see a result within a day as I can't really be bothered sitting for 4-5 days. That being said listening to cricket on the radio while doing something else is probably one of the last (but good reasons) why I listen to any Radio these days.
