Wolf-Rayet star blues

A Wolf-Rayet star is a star going through troubles: instead of starlight shining out in all directions, its more like a blowtorch blasting gigatons of its own outer layers everywhere. Its a slow motion explosion- taking place over millions of years.

Those from EVE Online may recall those sometimes through the wormholes. They were always jaw dropping for me.

Seeing that the Galaxy map star class filter had Wolf-rayet stars as a filter option, I was eager to hunt one down, and maybe go see it up close.

Nearest on (IRL and in game) is Gamma Velorum. Not too far away. I grew excited.

Then saw "Unknown Permit Required" :(

The next nearest one was Theta Muscae, but it didn't appear to be a WR in game. And it was a bit too far away for my exploratory jump endurance/patience.

So sad. WR stars are one of the more interesting things there is to see out there.

.. it might be rough on my shields visiting one, But I would risk it!

(don't even get me started on Eta Carinae [a bit less slow motion star explosion]- another jaw dropper that appears to not be reachable in game)

There are hundreds of Wolf-Rayets out there that I visited and discovered.

That said, if you are expecting a visual spectacle then you'll be sorely disappointed: They look like just another star.

Here we go: A pic I took of a Wolf-Rayet orbiting an O-star. The big dude above my head is the Wolf-Rayet and the star in the distance is the O-star. Head over to the Schee Prue cluster if you want to see plenty, although there are also a lot closer by.
