My view is casuals don't spoil games per se.. BUT I believe there is a time and a place for casual games and one for long term time sinks .... And i would rather developers decide which market they are going to go for and be clear about it..... Because for the casual dip in dip out player, being expected to commit 500 hrs + to get access to all the shiny things would be considered unreasonable.... OTOH having a game hitch her skirt and show you her knickers in a mere 50 hrs can be equally rubbish for the player who plans to commit significant game time over a number of years too.
It's all about knowing your audience and marketing properly and not trying to be all things to all people imo
