Wonder where they got the idea for this?.

Am I the only one who greatly prefers Elite's ship designs over Star Citizen's? Elite's ships feel like they could be real ships of the future, SC's feel like they are out of some anime cartoon, or a Nintendo game. They just look so frail and fragile...

I think they're a mixed bag, some of the SC ships are pretty functional looking, but you're right that there's a lot more flimsy looking bits and bobs hanging off them.

The same goes for the internal design, some of them are really neat (I forget the name (Redeemer - that's it), but the fan-made one that won the competition is very well arranged) and some are just needlessly convoluted, like the designers were striving to replicate the Nostromo's corridors.
I like the Avenger as well, that's a nice simple ship.

I hope OP doesn't get into trouble for posting the suggestion that they are playfully doing the same as we sometimes do.

I can imagine the SC forums going: "We don't want SC turn into another Elite. If you want that sort of antics, play Elite".

Nah, they seem fine with "us" from what I see :).
Talking of fun though it did go a little bit low brow after it seems.....

Somewhere there is a fleet commander sat in a bunker head in hands, muttering about the billions of credits spent on training those pilots and the countless cost of those ships and what do they use them for?.

Far from it, they make very little sense. The more distant and thinly supported bits you have the more easily something is broken. Elite's monolithic structures (on the whole) are much more logical

I do not dislike the SC ships at all, I play both games and see both as very different animals so do not really compare them.
The ships in both games seem to fit the flavour of each to me.
Am quite fond of my cutlass black.
Ps they are at it again...

I'd never really looked at Star Citizen before, but, having spent about 5 minutes looking through images in Google search, a lot of their work looks like they pinched someone else's design, filed off the serial numbers and changed just enough to avoid copyright violations.

Eh, I wouldn't agree with that. Star Citizen is Chris Robert's baby, a developer who I am super fond of. I own many games he's worked on, games like Wing Commander, Starlancer, and Conquest Frontier Wars (an awesome space strategy game that I still play to this day!). While his space ship designs are detailed and creative, I just don't like them very much. Too many frail looking parts, they look like one good missile would shred most of them to pieces instantly. They look like they are trying to win fanciest starship contests or shows. I'm more of Millenium Falcon kind of guy, which is why I love pretty much all of Elite's ship designs. They look rugged, durable, and many have a workhorse look to them that just seems functional and practical.

Frack, now I want to play some Conquest Frontier Wars.....

You're not the only one. I do sometimes feel that Elite's artists (and game designers for that matter) stick too much to nostalgia, but overall the ships seem believable to me, if that term can even be applied to sci fi ships over 1000 years in the future. SC's designs seem to be form over function rather than following it; a good example of that are the cockpits. In SC there's so much decorative crap in those cockpits to distract you / obstruct your view it's not even funny..
