Newcomer / Intro Won't Look at Panel?

Got new sticks and have been setting buttons but I think this may be a bug.
When I hit 1,2,3,4 I can hear the panel pop up and my menu navigation UI sounds but my head won't look at the panel any more. Did I make a change I shouldn't have or is this a bug?
I did set my look to my thumb joystick. Could that have doe something? I cleared the binding to see and it made no change, still won't look.
I do not have track ir or anything like that, just dual sticks.

If the panel opens but your view doesn't shift to it, it usually means you've got head-tracking on. I.e. the game doesn't move the camera on its own because it expects you to move it yourself.
Could be that.

It was the Look at UI option or something like that in the Modes section.
But here's the thing. All my buttons were reset today when I logged in. I had to set all my buttons again but this time the Look at UI switch worked today and last night it didn't, that's why I came here. So problem solved..but was it a problem or a bug? Not sure.

Elite has this annoying habit (well, one of a whole host of them) of resetting your bindings to default when you launch it without the bound controller plugged in or when your controller unplugs during the game.
It happens to me quite regularly because most of my USB ports are worn out.

It's usually a good idea to backup your bindings for safekeeping. They can get reset quite easily.
They are located at C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options

In addition to backing them up it helps to rename them, not only the file name but also the name on the second line of the bindings file which is what the game uses. That way the game shouldn’t rewrite the file when your controller wasn’t connected or was connected to a different port.

Thankyou for this very useful info I did not know. I remember either unplugging it right after I started the game or plugged it in late so this explains a lot and helps me from doing it again.

Of course I went to save everything today and it was all gone again.
It literally takes me a couple hours each time so that's like 7 hours in 3 days setting buttons. Exactly how I imagined playing with my new sticks, by setting the buttons over and over flipping through awesome multi layer menus. Oh the joy.

OK - first thing - don't keep copies of binds files in the same directory as that can cause any changes you make to not be saved. Keep copies in a different location.

Are you relying on using your binds named as "custom"? "Custom" named binds are the only ones that the game EVER overwrites on error conditions. If you rename your binds files (not just the file name) they will NEVER be overwritten / lost.

There is a guide to this pinned to the top of the PC sub-forum:

good luck
