Parks Woodland Road Fun Fair - Fast Build in 7 x 7 minute episodes

Woodland Road Fun Fair (a complete build in 7 episodes x 7 minutes)

*** sqmsygames June Project ***

In this series, I hope to build a SMALL park, from design to completion, in just a few weekends, with tips you can use even if you are new to Planet Coaster and feel held back by a lack of ideas and inspirations.

If you're already a master builder, or quite experienced, then probably this is not for you. You are way beyond this already.
If you are trying to squeeze max fun from minimum playtime, or you are new, then you'll probably get a few tips from this short project...

Sam and I had a rough idea for a park, for a fast build over the four weekends of June, and we will share the processes we use as we come up with ideas, design, and plan both the park and the video series as well, and build a small park, fairly quickly.

The very rough idea, for a park, is this: the Planco people (who seem to teleport around in a tunnel system?!?!?) have a dead end tunnel they call "Woodland Road" (because it ends in... woodlands) and they've built a natural reserve there, with a woodland trail, a lake recreation area and a lookout point. What they really want, is a fairground park to take the kids to.

So... we'll need to plan the project (not let it get too big), build the backstory as outlined above, then build the fun fair / fairground. We will record everything, and compile 7 short episodes presenting the project from start to end. Each 7 minute video presenting the highlights of roughly a 3-6 hour gaming session, except the first which is the planning and series design notes.

So our objectives are:
* Build a Fun Fairground "Park" in 4 weekends (7-8 gameplay sessions).
* From scratch - no Blueprints.
* Present the build in 7 episodes of about 7 minutes per video.
* Each episode with highlights from one gameplay session (3-6 hours of gameplay time).
* Cover a bunch of "How Do I...?" topics, like inspiration, planning, design, layouts, backstory, 1m grids, night lighting, tunnels for paths, priority passes, excitement-fear-nausea, decorating rides, decorating shops...
* Complete the whole thing in under 40 hours of game play.
* Edit and upload videos, as we go, totaling less than 50 minutes of video viewing (7 ep x 7 min).

ROUGH PLAN (subject to change):

Episode 1: Concepts and design; topics:
* how do i... come up with an idea (inspiration) for a Planet Coaster park build project
* how do i... plan the theme, designs, layouts and backstory for the park
* how do i... plan the build schedule
* how do i... plan the video series
* how do i... "get started" and prevent the scope from exploding until it's all too hard.

Episode 2: Preparing the backstory location
Episode 3: Decorating the backstory location
Episode 4: Preparing the fairground site layout
Episode 5: Coaster(s) / Detailing shops and rides
Episode 6: Final detailing
Episode 7: Opening Day!

We will try to keep it simple, and quick, but interesting enough that we have fun building it.
It'll be an extra bonus if it's useful to you as well. :)

As I type this, it's Sunday evening in NZ, and I have the raw recordings of the first two sessions (I got excited and got ahead of schedule already).
So video #1 (planning) is uploading and processing now, available in about 1 hour... I'll be back later this evening and add a link.
I'll have vid #2 online tomorrow.

Cheers all, enjoy the rest of your weekend.
James, and Sam

P.S. If you have some "how do i...?" questions that you'd like me to try to cover in the videos as the build proceeds, please ask.
Remember though, it's a fast build, so nothing too complex :)

P.P.S. edit: here's video #1. warning - no build yet, just planning notes and discussion about the planning process...

This is a great idea and very well designed. Can't wait to see where it goes :)

Will you upload the finished park to the workshop?

Hey James,
great idea, and thanks soooo much for sharing your thoughts and the story about the park!

a nice project, I will follow for sure!

Enjoy making the park and have a wonderful time!

Hi James, I'm on board with you on this project. It should be interesting watching how you create this. Great idea for anyone who is not good at building anything like me. [big grin]

Thank you elekvault... I hadn't thought about it, but if you'd like me to, I'm happy to. :)

Thanks Tom, I appreciate the kind words, it was a bit of a gamble to publish a video that is just my scribbling!

Thank you Coasterbuff, I'll do my best to be useful... [yesnod][yesnod]

Here's the second video, and I'm still on schedule, I have recorded the raw footage for build session 2 and 3 so next weekend i'll edit and upload those videos (#3 and #4) on time. :)
Thanks for the encouragement, much appreciated.

In this video (#2 of 7) i'm working on the backstory location.
The actual Fun Fair will be a small site directly north of the entrance, so the path built in this video will branch to the right into the Fairground.
The lake, rec area and lookout area will stay and hopefully get prettied up a bit if i have enough time.

Hey James. It sounds like you and Sam are planning a nice project. I'll try to follow your progress on this one.

Good luck & enjoy! : )

Thanks Joël, appreciated.

I'm enjoying the strain of resisting my OCD urge to get up close and pile on the detail. It's about time I learn to build quickly without devoting so much time and attention to the micro details. :)

It's a great shame this forum doesn't have a separate area for tutorials. So many good ones have gone by the boards as a result. I hope this changes before you finish this.

Thanks both!

Apologies for the delay publishing #3 today.
In fact it is all ready except the voice-over, because I got sick and lost my voice.
Hopefully I'll get a big sleep and recover some vocal abilities in the morning :)

Here's the next video - PLEASE FORGIVE the rough voice and occasional audio cut where i deleted a coughing fit :)

I'm still on track to complete 7x7 in June, according to plan, but i'll wait another day before I try to record the voice over for #4.

Apologies for the delay with video #4, my voice is still wrecked.

I have recorded #5 raw footage however, and here's a couple of teaser stills:

still on track for 7 x 7 min by the end of June :)

Video number 4, of 7, uploaded.... Preparing the fun fair site; leveling, fences, trees, positioning rides and shops.

Still editing out explosions of coughing, but, you know, the show must go and all that...

The still images in the post above are from video #5, which i should be editing tomorrow.

Looking good. Hope you have fully recovered now James.

Thanks Coasterbuff! I'm feeling a lot better, although you can still hear my voice catching a bit even in this latest video :)

Thanks also to everyone for all the feedback on various social media, about the series, much appreciated.

To summarise the project once more:

It's getting late on Friday night here in New Zealand, and I've had a busy week working, so I've only just completed editing and uploading the video, #5, from last weekend's loooong build session.

HERE IT IS... this one has the shop builds [in steam workshop here] and a coaster build:

The banner titles are about the build, and the voiceover is about the series overall and the 12 hour blowout last weekend building the main coaster :)
Fortunately the previous sessions have been fast, but now i think now i'll struggle to finish in the budgeted 40 hours.
But it'll be close.

Very happy with the coaster too, E 6.1 F 4.5 N 1.5 ... all "in the green"; pretty good compared to others i've built.

I'm cleaned out of gameplay footage again, so another build session in the morning, for video #6

Cheers all, enjoy your weekend.
James, and Sam

Video #6 in the series now uploaded.

The Fun Fair is complete.
Total time was just under 44 hours for the entire project, so just over budget.

CHALLENGES
-----------------

The woodland path decorating took a lot longer than I intended.
The coaster took 12 hours longer than intended, which meant that the queue detailing had to be essentially zero.
I did not have time to detail the coaster, so it's a "coming soon" attraction on opening day.

Next video, hopefully tomorrow, will be the opening day, and i spent ALL last weekend on ride detailing, so i've got some nice footage for a "Series 2".

Hope you've enjoyed it, and found it useful.

Cheers
James and Sam

This is a really very beautiful project! The atmosphere of the fair is so realistic. I very much like the shops and the spinning coaster, which has an amazing cool and realistic "wild mouse" look! And the lake is pure perfect landscaping!
Best regards, Corkscrewloop:)

Thank you! Much appreciated.

#7 is ready now.

There's also a few sneak peaks at Phase Two of the Fun Fair; detailed ride queues, and the decorating of the coaster (The Vomit Comet).

The plan is to proceed with a Series Two during July; another 7 videos.
