Word of warning for when 2.1 goes live

Funny thing is, there's absolutely not a thing in the 2.1 patch that makes me want to return to the bubble. The engineer stuff is grindfest a gogo. And the rewards aren't worth it. No new boat to take out into deep space. No new exploring toys. And the gfx improvements will happen anyway.

Am I missing something? It's a big change log, I could have.

So far :
Multi-stacking or extremely over powered shields(will be nerfed)
An unlimited beam laser(because it cools the ship and can be fired forever(will be nerfed)
Engineer grindfest, although some of the results are very good, like 25% increase in FSD range(again nerfed or intended?)
And many other smaller things(outfit screen change etc.)

No, you're not missing much that would interest this forum :)

The only silver lining for explorers is the FSD range increase, for those who are pushing the limits getting to ends of spiral arms or previously nearly reachable areas.

That's another good point. With all the new variables, it'll take a while before they're even remotely balanced. Somehow I don't think the Beta is going to last another month to iron all of them out.

It's another big update primarily for the combat crowd, so yeah there isn't much in it for explorers. I will go through the hassle and grind to boost my Asp's jump range because I feel it will be useful, but other than the FSD recipe the engineers don't have much for me. I'm looking forward to ice mining though, that's an awesome addition. But yeah most everything in this update that impacts exploration are just passive minor improvements that just happen.

So no you aren't missing anything.

I wanted to write something about how we now have a lot more choices in outfitting our ships, in not having to trade range for armor and stuff like that, but it's boring. Let me say something else:

After spending some time (and fish) in Beta, I've come to the conclusion that Engineers changes the game in a lot of subtle ways. All the loud talk about grind fests and NPC demons, overpowered shields and magic beam lasers drowns out the subtle atmospheric change the game has undergone.

I only noticed it when I switched back to 2.0 for a session and realized that, for lack of a better word, it suddenly seemed sterile. Contacts didn't produce unexpected scan data. Signal sources didn't say what was going on. My faction had no face. The graphics seemed less deep and lively. NPCs didn't run away. Stations didn't have traffic control voices.

And ships were all the same. My engineered ships now have quirks. Little differences from the standard versions: a little more heat sensitivity, half a second shorter spool up time, stuff like that. Stuff you can't enter in Coriolis. Barely noticeable until it's gone, but it adds a lot of character. Personality, if you will.

All in all, the game feels much more alive to me, not because of one huge change, but a lot of little ones. I didn't miss anything before, but I wouldn't want to turn back either now that I've seen them.

Yet another arms race, so yes business as usual.
But hope we have counters of all new weapons. So likely will have to spend time getting FSD cool down and jump range mods. No need to keep up with arms just keep up with how to avoid.

I hope FD understand Elite was NEVER just a combat game?

no but it is a dangerous game full of combat ships

At the very least, you'll probably want to get the Thrusters upgrade so you can effectively get away when you encounter other ships, human or otherwise.

You have to remember, the last time we encountered aliens, they had far superior technology. 2.1 represents an incremental increase for humankind. Pushing forward as we always do to match the threats and requirements of the day.

Is it just me?

Just heading out in a Cobra to plod around for a few weeks near the bubble.

Have run the Beta for a while and after the sacrifice of a few fish (expensive enough these days, a quick trip to t'chippy for a fish supper last week confirmed that, no change from a shilling for 2 stone of monkey nuts like the good old days) I managed to get a decent looking Python which would suit most roles nicely.

However I really can't be bothered to run around for ages looking for stuff to make it happen once it all goes live.

Is not part of the reason for trading and generating vast wealth so that we can have nice things. Why can't we just pay these engineers an inflated price in credits and they can arrange for their minions to bounce around on planets finding the required gear. Does Value Added not exist in 3302?

Or maybe its just me being a grumpy get and not "getting it".

Agreed ian, Beta has removed the gringfest. Many don't realise that to get their ship setup as they want:
they need to visit 3 or more engineers
need to take each engineer to level 5
Need materials (new ones)
And finally after everything they have to roll the dice when they decide to implement the "recipe" .

Oh and from my experience, I had to roll the dice many times till I got the setup for each module, and even then didn't max my modules. Including weapons we're talking upwards of 15 modules on many ships.

I don't mind the grind, but once we go live and many cmdrs still have not got what they want after a month or 2, we will hear cries of grindfest. Hope it works out.

Agree about the potential hullabaloo if it is actually as hard to find the required materials as first reports suggest.

I don't mind the grind either, I do however dislike the idea of having to grind again (something not quite right about that statement but I cant put my finger on it). I already did a lot of grinding to get several hundred million credits in the bank which now appear to be pretty much useless.

When I upgrade the video card on my computer I go and buy an upgrade; I don't have to find the nearest 20 to 30 mining sites, look for some stray silicon, germanium and perhaps gold for the connectors and then drop these off at PC World to get my upgrade.

I expect this will be good if you are looking for extra pew pew from weapons alone but with the fine balance required in an exploration build, for the majority I would think the extra 20% increase in jump distance wont be worth 2 to 3 months of planet scouring.

Anyway its Saturday so I am happy :)

WARNING TO ALL EXPLORERS CARRYING DATA:

If you are returning with a lot of data, DO NOT attempt to fight any AI if interdicted, run like the wind. The new AI fights tough but that is not the problem, occasionally the AI spawns with some type or kind of weapon (unconfirmed what exactly it is yet) that literally melts ships in mere seconds, no matter how strong your shields are and no matter how much hull you have to chew through.

This has been widely reported (and dismissed as "git gud challenge" by combat proponents) by many commanders but here is a video showing exactly what the bug does. Watch what this AI Vulture does to the player's Python when it's one weapon finally lands some hits:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oZN_yZ07-18

A lot of people have reported trying to run but being cut down in mere seconds, so when you do run zig zag and juke like a drunk bicycle rider to best avoid the AI's weapons even touching you. Hopefully this gets fixed soon by the devs.

I was flying my Asp that I took on DW. I had upgraded from a D3 shield to an A3 shield but I hadn't yet found the A6. I got interdicted. I turned around and saw that I was faced by a Python coming towards me demanding my cargo. I flew past it and boosted away with full chaff, FA off, full pips to engines. I died seconds later.

There are plenty of people out there, like me, willing to give an armed escort to any explorer coming back from the Black. Make use of them.

I just watched the same video link that Mengy posted also linked in Dangerous Discussion.
A two second Python kill? That's game over for me. I guess I'll go replay The Witcher 3 or purchase Fallout 4 while I wait for a fix.
(Note to mods: This isn't an "I quit the game post", it's a "I'm taking a break until this bug is fixed")

Guys, some had honking problems, some had data loss problems, some NPC problems.

The point was that since Beta we have always seen some sort of broken exploration (over powered NPCs destroying our data is broken exploration ) after a major update. My caution was whether ED is broken or not, don't sell data or enter the bubble alone ! The 1st or 2nd update usually fixes most of these.
