Working with friends

Hey,
My friend has been asking me if we could "squad up" or co-op together in the game, and I have no idea hah. I know there are private groups and all but I didn't see any sort of way to co-op? Are there missions you can do together? any easy way to detect a friend? ect. Thanks!

I tried to just chat with two friends in the game last night who were in the same system and we couldn't even do that. Supposedly there will be ways to team up (slave frame shift drives, etc.) and chat, but so far it looks like it's a bit flaky to me. If I'm missing something, I'd love to know. :)

You have to manually bind the chat keys (lookup the Options->Controls menu). The two ships who chat to each other have to see each other in the game (in SuperCruise or normal flight).

I did have the chat keys figured, but the requirement for friends to actually see one another in the same system is news to me. Ok... well, I guess that makes sense. Even so, I couldn't see my friends either. We were all at Beagle 2. One of my friends was listed as offline even though he could see ME online and we were both communicating through Google Hangouts, so I know we were at the right place at the right time.
