Wormholes.

We add random wormholes around the galaxy and they take you from 1-10,000 lightyears away in a random direction. I dunno, im just an idiot

They would be cool, even if they only appeared now and again. So if you there at a set frequency you could use it. Maybe a way of getting 80 percent the way to colonia

Well, to be scientifically accurate there would have to be a chance they could spit you out
A) in another galaxy (delete your cmdr save and start over)
B) in another time (delete you cmdr save and start over)
C) not spit you out at all (delete your cmdr save and start over)
D) inside the event horizon of a black hole (see above)
E) in intergalactic space (Again, delete your save)

It would however add some 'danger' to elite dangerous.

Sounds awesome to me!

Not going to happen. Frontier does do not want to split the galaxy into sections.

There are other games that support wormholes.

Not dividing the Galaxy at all. Just having random Jumps to add some sort of Depth to exploration. Maybe going through these wormholes would take you to something like.. another lost generation ship or something.

I'd just want them added to look at them, FDev is amazing when it comes to visual detail! ;)

You're Damn right XD

Deleting save might be abit too harsh, Cmdrs would just avoid wormholes at that point which makes them a useless feature

Been discussed and beaten to death. Not going to happen.

Sure, there are ways it could work... Imagine a wormhole as a signal source which links to another random location. The caveat here being that it is transient - it will cease to exist a short time after the instances which contains either end become inactive. Players can choose to explore but have to hold open the ends of the wormhole by cooperating.

Still not going to happen...

It could happen.. but using wormholes to solve what problem/issues; getting to colonia? Colonia is remote for the sake of being remote... nothing to solve.

As for rng travel for the sake of rng....non priority

I'd like them as a random exploration mechanic, not fast travel.

No guarantees on where you'll end up, just a rough guage on distance once you've scanned it. And it's one way (exploration rank and data bonus for scanning both ends though!)
But persistent enough you can get a wing through it (providing one of you stays at the start point to keep the instance alive).

Wormholes have never been part of 34 plus years of Elite history starting with the 1984 game. It not going to happen.

If they do add wormholes. A lot of Older Elite players will leave. Why because of It, not something that was ever going to be added to the game.

Leaving because of adding something new to a game is rather silly.

Holo-me was also never part of Elite history till ED. :p

If they add like risks to using wormholes it could work. Such as X amount chance that the ship breaks while using a wormhole.

Well, I am also on the no side of this argument, for realism purposes (although we literally create our own wormholes to travel and live in a galaxy of aliens :D) if they were added however, they should be used as more as a observational pheromone. much like Black holes. except flying through it has to highly random and dangerous. and in no way used as a viable aspect of travel....IF they were going to do it. which they wont :D

I can hear the " I want a refund, that wormhole made me teleport to another galaxy (or the black) and I had to destroy my ship! Maaaaa blah blah blah" :D

To put it bluntly without degrading you. You're wrong. Wormholes have most definitely been Elite Dangerous history.

And to add spice to the conversation, magic space portals exist, used by our space buddies the Thargoids

In summary wormholes do exist in this game's lore and other better magic transportation methods exist IN game. Don't down talk on people's hopes for reducing the wasted time it takes getting places.

Out of darkness IIRC is 'canon' right?

https://books.google.com/books?id=NiaKBAAAQBAJ&q=wormhole#v=snippet&q=wormhole&f=false

The stars stretched as Moira's stomache was left behind the engines. Exotic particles released by the hull and changed by the shields formed a new ball of reality that went cascading down the spiral wormhole the hyperdrive drilled through normal space. The Walls flew by, blue shifted light surfaces flickering with wisps of matter and flashes of energy.

i have not read any of em, just, they use the word

afaik Thargoids make a wormhole, which might be why their tunnel distorts space-time... but does it matter?
i.e. > do explorers/players just want to spin a slot machine and get randomly lost?

That is not the game. That a book someone made with permission from Frontier that not Elite Dangerous the game. Try again.

See you are mixing the Writers pack with the game.

The writer’s pack: The right to write one piece of written fiction set in the Elite: Dangerous world, and (subject to reasonable approval of the content) release it commercially, without paying Frontier further royalties, independently of the game. This category includes all the rewards above. Frontier will cooperate to allow the system name, commander name, planet name, planet description, space station names to be positioned and used in a way to support the fiction within the game. Frontier will also help publicise your title at the time of release of “Elite: Dangerous”, as long as it is finished at that point, alongside the official sequel to “The Dark Wheel”.
