Just thought I would start a poll to see what people here thought was the worst ships design and why, to balance up the poll about teh best player ship.

I will start it off by saying I hate the new Adder because:

  • It looks so similar to the Hauler
  • It looks nothing like the original Adder

But its a close thing because I also hate the new Asp because of its stupid tail fins and cockpit just ruins the origibnal design so much for me - originally the Asp was my favourite ship in Frontier and FFE.

So for that reason I will allow this poll to be multiple choice just to see what happens.

The Adder for the same reasons you stated.

The Orca.
Not because it is a fantastic looking ship, (and it is)
Not because it has a great looking cockpit when you turn to look (it has)
Not because it has a really sleek design with go faster finned small wings. (does look really fast).

No the Orca is my choice because it costs a fortune and you can not do much with it yet as it is a passenger transport with no passengers in the game. (unless slaves get luxury travel in the future.)

If we are talking aesthetically then the Adder. That thing is damn ugly.

Also anyone else noticing gimballed lasers pass under the hull on the flat side when you are head on with it? I tent to try to be perpendicular to it to shoot it to guarantee hitting the damn thing.

why the negative approach and not the positive.
like ; what do you think is the best design?
or is it a modern forum thing , as I see so many do it this way.

but back on subject Ive no idea what's the best design cos no one has seen all ships yet.
up to now I like the Cobra best.

I think the Adder design comes from a few comments in the original manual ("Preggs Wingfolding System" IIRC - that'll look pretty neat if it deploys when we eventually get planetary landings). Agree it looks nothing like the original though and too much like the Hauler.

Not too keen on yet another Viper redesign either.

On a positive note I like how they've taken the basic old Python and Anaconda ice cream cone designs and turned them into something powerful-looking that's still recognisably the original ship.

Cobra is by far my favorite to use, but honestly I really love the shape of the hauler.

I wish the ships in general were more specialized. I understand the all-around ships being able to commit to any task, but the specialized ships don't feel specialized enough to me. Especially the exploration ships.

This is one area that maybe they could look to SC to learn from. I really enjoy this game but gawds the ships designs just plain blow nuggets.

I sometimes think hmm they designed these ship while at McDonalds while eating some chicken Mcnuggets. :D

When I say this I mean the overall shape of the ships and not what they can equip/use etc.

I was initially sceptical about the Adder for the reasons stated above, but I have grown to love it. In terms of intended it use it fits with the original Adder: a small multi-role shuttle. It fits with the Zorgon Peterson aesthetic and the interior is lovely. If it was more like the FFE Adder, I think it would be too similar to the smaller Faulcon DeLacy ships and we already have a lot of them in the game.

However I'm not a fan of the Asp. Sure, it's a capable ship in-game, but did we really need another Lakon design? It feels like an Asp body, which I think has been very well realised, with a cookie-cutter Lakon "space truck" cab stuck on the front. I would have liked the Asp to fit in more with the Core Dynamics aesthetic; with a cockpit design that gives the ship a more militaristic feel.
Maybe Core Dynamics could build an "Asp Adventurer" under license?

I can't vote because I'm yet to run into a ship in my hands that doesn't feel good to fly.

My personal boogeyman ship is the Asp though. I've lost 3 of them without enough money to pay insurance.

  1. Shortly before a wipe in Beta, I boosted an asp into a station and found out the hard way how much more deceleration time the asp needs compared to the cobra. I lost the asp, and a full hold of gold - total loss about 8 million credits
  2. Shortly before Gamma, I crashed my asp into a station again. Then rebought it and took off, now I had not enough to cover a second rebuy and predictably I managed to get blown up before gaining enough cash to pay for the rebuy. Total loss about 14 million credits
  3. 1 day before launch, Frontier increased rebuy costs significantly, and in that brief window before they were reverted, I was flying my new expedition fitted asp and was rammed in combat by a cobra. I was at low shields with 0 pips in systems. The result was my asp went bang and I was looking at a rebuy screen where I couldn't afford to rebuy. This one hurt - total loss 44 million credits.

Now I am looking at buying an asp again..... my husband tells me no though.

This is clearly a taste issue because I think most the SC ships look over-designed, contrived and some are just plain ridiculous :p I like some of the simpler designs - Aurora, Freelancer and the Redeemer for example. But then, we have ships like the 300i, Mustang, Hornet, Cutlass and especially the Constellation - full of twiddly bits that serve no apparent purpose and are just waiting to get shot off in battle. Give me a solid, slab sided and heavily armoured Faulcon DeLacy any day!
EDIT:
I like the Adder and Hauler because they are not supposed to be desirable space-Bentleys. They are practical ships, designed to do a job and nothing more. I honestly like that. Adds some realism because not every ship in the game should be a sports car, limousine or killing machine.

Kind of, but remember this is supposed to be a modern retake on a thirty year old game, when the ship designs were by necessity limited to very primitive shapes. Tbh i kinda like the visual reminders of that old game, and lets face it, it just wouldn't be elite without the cobra, and its not as if they can just go nuts with a sweet futuristic scifi design and then slap the cobra name on it. They pushed the boundaries a little bit when they sexed-up the imp ships, and they look pretty awesome.

I guess if they opened up a new line of ships then they could really go nuts (as they kind of have with the hauler, t6/7/9, orca, fed drop-ship etc) but updating the old ship lines, they are somewhat restricted in how far they can push those old primitive designs.

Speaking of the old ship lines, i kinda wanna see more of them resurrected - i.e. Birds of prey for the fighters (eagle, hawk, falcon, kestrel etc) snakes for the multirole (the main ships we have now) and the big cats for the big haulers (lion, tiger, panther etc)

Most of the ship shapes are based off of designs from previous titles, I think. Plus, you want ships to have relatively simple designs, just so docking and whatnot is easier. I agree though, they are a lil bit boring at times.

I am frustrated with the way the compartments are set up for ships. I would think a freighter should have almost no combat capability, somewhat low jump range or fuel capacity, but a large amount of internal compartments for cargo racks. An explorer would have high fuel, large FSD compartment, but almost no internals or weapons. Combat ship etc.

I'd say the Eagle is my least favorite because of how papery it is. Federal Dropship would be 2nd because it seems inadequate for the cost.
