Worth getting for PS5? (old PC player)

Hi all,

I've played a bit of ED on my PC (over a year ago) but am trying to get away from yet more hours sitting at a desk staring at a screen a foot from my eyes :) Have bought myself a PS5 and was all keen to try ED on it, but a quick browse of this forum is filling me with Fear and Trepidation.

Not wishing to open a can of worms, but can anyone point me to a good recent (2021) review of the PS5 version of the game, or suggest whether the console version will be enjoyable for someone who has played on the PC version in the past? What are the major benefits/gripes of the PS version?

Many thanks in advance!

Performance is generally good on the PS5. Better frame rate and loading times than standard PS4 and PS4 Pro. Supercruise transition times are usually improved over the old consoles too.

Unfortunately looks just like the PS4 Pro version so stuck at 1080p and at the moment FDev appear to have no plans for native a PS5 version of Elite or Odyssey.

Oh also.

Networking appears worse on PlayStation versus PC.

After playing many hours on PS5 and getting a decent gaming PC myself. My advice would be stick with the PC version.

Thanks everyone, appreciate the speedy responses. Unfortunately my PC is old and potato :) but it might just be able to manage 2K display resolution, and at least I could get Odyssey.....maybe I could try using Steam Link to broadcast to my TV for pseudo-console play! Will have to try it out.

I was playing Elite Dangerous on PS4 (since 2017, before on Mac) and now for several months already on PS5. Performance is excellent. I play with the Thrustmaster Hotas for PS4. I have many friends on Playstation playing Elite Dangerous and I'm doing explorations with them most of the time. I don't need Odyssey before it is reliable and even then: I don't need a ego-shooter in Elite Dangerous.

I have my laptop hooked to TV just using a 2m HDMI cable, works fine eg:

Use the Display output to send video only to TV (sometimes mirror to both laptop and TV can be good if using chat a lot). You get the benifit of having keyboard controls too, on PS5 a keyboard can only be used for text input in the chat window, not command binding.

As for console elite on PS5, it mostly runs, but if i had to sum it up in one word it'd be "neglected".
It's PS4 code using the default backwards compatibility. Compared to PC you dont get any benefits except being able to sit on a sofa (which you can do with an HDMI cable as above), and default PS friends list, shareplay etc. You get almost all the downsides, including the not great network instancing, lower cmdr numbers. console specific crashes that havent been acknowledged FDev are even working on.

Personally i'd not recommend buying it on PS4/5 if you have a PC already, as the platform may be entirely abandoned, so you're better off progressing on a PC cmdr for future proofing; the performance isn't worth it, and can be matched by probably even your modest PC; no mods like on PC, HUD changing, voice attack, in-game video display, etc.

The usual benefits of console gaming slant heavily to PC for Elite sadly.

For context I was playing Elite on PC from 3301, jumped to PS4 for console launch, and PS4/5 has been my primary platform since (i'm 99% a console player, just PC for specific games). In-game Elite says 1200 hours on PC, 6000 hours PS4/5.

I think Elite is £20 on PSN at the moment, with no Odyssey in sight and you'd be playing on "2017 mode" with shimmering shadows, low resolution and textures, wing-induced frame drops, blue screen crashes and the odd Taupe Cobra.

Having played on PC, PS4 and PS5 my advice would be to explore the steam link option for a while, and not invest anything in starting again on the console version of this game at the moment.

I'm not convinced Elite has a future on PS5 - and without any announcements about Odyssey, a native enhanced PS5 version, cross play, account transfer or cross save - it's hard to recommend someone to buy the game as-is on PS5 when they have even a modest PC to play the game on already.

Thanks again guys. It's a pity as it seems like the perfect game to showcase the PS5's strengths, but as you say, it sounds like (after the initial sales burst) ED on the platform is being slowly left to rot, though I appreciate from the above that some folks are still enjoying it. Cheers for all the advice though. @Stinja thanks for showing your setup - alas, my PC is a desktop, in the other room 🙃 so the Steam Link option will probably be the best bet, though not sure the controller range will reach....anyway, something to play around with in my idle time, to get it working!

Coolness and happy to help.
Don't get me wrong, i am a console gamer at heart, and fully accept it will often be an arguably worse version than a (high spec) PC version, but i prefer sitting on a sofa, big TV, and having friends on-hand that i've known for decades.

When good, console gaming is "better" than PC's theoretical better experience.

Sadly i really cannot recommend PS4/5 Elite at the moment.
If a FDev Community Manager wants to jump in and correct me on PS5 details.... anyone? Bueller? anyone? any CM watching the forums at all? Bueller?
Yeah well  Let's just wait and see... Otherwise stick with PC.

No.

I'd stay away from console edition. FD seem to have nothing but contempt for console gamers. There's no communication, hardly any support and we're always last in line, for anything! We have been screaming out for keyboard and mouse support for years, we got nothing. The control options have now got so ridiculous that it's hard to remember what combination of button presses does what (plus on many 'updates', the custom controls were reset!).

Even the smallest of patches needed to correct bugs takes months. I can't remember the last time I played and that's sad, as I had high hopes for this game. I don't know why FD don't just cut the life support and be done with consoles!

Thanks Tipo. Yeah, that seems the overall opinion, sadly! Spent the other night patching my Steam Controller and pairing it to my Android TV and am going to attempt to use Steam Link to get the PC version running instead.

Although - I do note that the PS4 version is currently "on sale" and vastly reduced. Tempted to buy it anyway, just to try. Don't say you didn't warn me.... 😋

You can buy it. And there's room for you in Raxxla Squadron if you're interested. But realistically you would get more out of the PC version in terms of updates and support and VR and some third party tools. Either way have fun and welcome back
