Worth going from 680 to 980?

/[/url]Also is it possible to sli a 680 and 980?

No its not possible to sli 680 and 980
And lower fps maybe related with unoptimized net-code in Wings feature or high ping connection for one wing, so its possible that 980 will not solve fps issues...

Many players - including some with very high-end rigs - are reporting issues with degeneration of visuals as the updates have been released. Of particular concern are various forms of stutter/judder that have become increasingly noticeable. I'd hazard a guess you're sadly of us affected by this.

FD have said they are looking into the issue and will be releasing optimisations with 1.3 that they are hoping will help.

The game was smooth on the 680 until the wings update came out.

Accoring to this there is not a lot of difference... http://www.hwcompare.com/18247/geforce-gtx-980-vs-geforce-gtx-680/

That's a horrible way to compare GPUs. The best way is to actually do the home work and look at comparative reviews.

A chip running at 1000Mhz that's built on one type of architecture will perform very differently from another chip built on another architecture running at the same 1000Mhz.

In this case, the Maxwell architecture in the 980 is a big step up from the Kepler architecture in the 680. Though it's worth noting that the big change in Maxwell was focused mostly on power saving. The 980 isn't really "that" big of an upgrade from the GTX 780 Ti, for example, but it gets better performance at a mere fraction of the power usage. In fact it uses less power than the 680.

With that said, Elite shouldn't need the latest and greatest GPU to run. As others have said, Elite's suffering from major problems that Frontier has to fix. Your 680 should be just fine running Elite for quite a while. It's getting a bit long in the tooth, but it's still a plenty powerful card. At least at 1080p.

No it is not possible to use SLI and lower card for anything other then physx card.

That said if Elite were to get directx 12 support, then yes you would be able to use them together.

this is a pretty useful webpage to compare GPUs and the 'GFlop/s' metric (billions of floating point operations per second) is a fairly useful (although theoretical) value to compare cards with. architectural differences can have a non measurable impact on this though so look at the other stats; texture fill rates, memory bandwidth etc when comparing different series (e.g. 600 with 900s) but within the same architecture (e.g. Maxwell, Keplar, Femi) it should be directly comparable.

real world reviews trumps all on-paper stats though!
