General / Off-Topic Worthy Kickstarters

one of my fave games homeworld, but I haven't backed that one as the tier I'm interested in has gone, probably cheaper to wait for their full release.

Same here Mobius, E D, SC and LT cleaned me out, but happy they made their target as I would certainly buy it when it's finished. :)

How worthy is Kickstarter itself?

What about the other side of the coin? Completely unworthy kickstarters. There's a woman who wants us to pledge $10 for a game written by her 9 year old child. She is exploiting her children to gain as much "cute-factor" support as possible.

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/susanwilson/9-year-old-building-an-rpg-to-prove-her-brothers-w

Her track record is not good. She tried to start a project to sell
$7.00 towels on Kickstarter for $25,00 , and then one selling
$22,00 phone cases on Indiegogo for $40.00

I'm sure that I wouldn't be the only person that's reported her. This project really calls the reputation of Kickstarter into question. And it makes me wonder about the future of crowdfunding.

I wouldn't worry too much. If the project is a scam, or a joke (and I don't just mean intentional joke like the Death Star, but where the creator is trying to claim he's serious, but you can see it's beyond his ability, like Lore) then people will see through them and simply not pledge.

I missed out on a really good Kickstarter, the Pebble Watch, thankfully their site is taking orders (but I don't have the money to order one, maybe one day).

May I suggest for this thread, that if you post a link to the Kickstarter, you also say when it ends, so people don't click on the link and moan that it ended months ago (that might seem silly to you, but trust me, someone will moan).

I hope you're right. This project is already 2740% overfunded. The comments section is rather lively. Kickstarter users who are worried that it will now be flooded with copycat panhandling projects are trying to convince American backers that the daughter of a multi-millionaire debt collector doesn't need $829 to send her to RPG camp when her mother spends twice that amount on a pair of shoes.

Those comments are being shouted out by people who have dewy-eyed kittens as their avatar by saying that those people are being rotten meanies to this 9 year old kid.

joke like the Death Star,

The Death Star also worries me. It has only made 327,000 of its 20,000,000 target but you know how the pledges hockeystick in the last hours.

My solution to this isn't to report it. But if the worst comes to the worst and the death star is actually built, we will need a plucky young pilot to fly down one of its trenches and drop a bomb through an exhaust port. I'm sure that there would be a cobra pilot within our ranks that has the necessary skills.

But we need an X-wing fighter in order to accomplish this task and that's where
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/simonkwan/crowdfunding-rebel-alliance-x-wing-squadron
comes in. So I'm asking any of you out there if you have pledged for the Death Star, cancel your pledge and join the ranks of those of us who are pure in heart and intentions.

Funding ends Monday Apr 1, 4:59pm BST.

And I can't explain why the young 'uns of today like Justin Beiber.

This is a wierd concept. A Kickstarter to send your 9-year old daughter to RPG school. And it's raised $20,000.

I can't help but analyse it. The mother wants her daughter to go to RPG school and is supporting her in that. That's a good thing. It could very well be the start of another great game programming career. She deserves the chance. If her mother can't afford to pay the fees, then it's a worthy cause. Not sure what Kickstarter's rules are on this, but it's a "mothery" type thing to do - support your kids. Obviously KS thought it was a good idea and was within their guidelines or they wouldn't have authorised the campaign.

On the face of it, though, it comes across as very borderline "please pay for my daughter's education". And, as noted, she's 9 - a very flighty age and thus there's a high chance that she'll do all this then lose interest by the time puberty hits. Could be a big waste of money. But then that's the thing about pledging on Kickstarter - it's based on trust and personal preference. Without which I wouldn't be writing an RPG either.

Some of the comments are a bit strong, especially given that a nine-year old will be reading them all - way to urinate on someone's confidence. No matter what the nefarious goals of the family are or what the opinion is on the project, the fact that a potential nine-year old is involved should be enough to give people a bit of pause on their criticisms.

The problem with these sorts of projects is that it ruins it for the honest people. Supporting your kids is a "mothery" type of thing to do and that is why I seriously doubt that she spent all her money on 1500 dollar shoes. Any normal mother would think about their child's education. It's not just speculation. She has admitted to buying the shoes and used the excuse of a gambling win at a casino.

But then any normal mother would love all her children equally, and they wouldn't post a project on a public website viewed by millions which would publicly humiliate her sons.

Please remember the the child did not set up the project. She is too young. This is all her mother's doing. She is basically saying "give me ten dollars and I'll get my daughter to write you an RPG". This project might not be against Kickstarter policy but are there not Child Labour Laws in the USA against this type of thing?

Most of the comments of doubt are phrased in the same tone as I've used above. None of the ones I have read have been attacks on the children, but I too was concerned about her children reading the comments and so I just asked Kickstarter to take down the project without posting why I came to this conclusion.

Jeez. I wonder if I can get people to fund my life for a year and I will send people who pledge $500 a postcard each from all the exotic locations I visit (charging an additional $10 for those who live outside North America)?

If I can get my hands on a Google Glass I can stream it live for people who pledge £1500!

well they made target but the next big thing is they have yet to get the licence from the THQ sell off.

I did back it in the end as the tier that gave you homeworld hd, homeword touch and homeword 3 came available.

Mobius... scuse my ignorance... but LT? I didnt see that one..

SC yes, I was a Mark Hamill Wing Commander fan, that was my FAVOURITE space game of that time, but it was the generic Cut Scene game, however an exceptional amount of cut scenes complete immersed you in the story... gameplay however.. not as nice.. good pew pew game.. :D Loved it.
not sure SC will hit the mark.... I am confident that ED will though.

I would like to see kickstarters for Elite Dangerous controllers now!! :D

I poured my dosh into ED, SC, Lave Revolution, and some of the other books.. I missed the Kickstarters for all but Lave Revolution. Thank goodness for paypal.

that has always been the way of the young folk ^^

not that i enjoy/understand the over commercialised that gets put out these days. but alien, be happy record companies have lost the battle for the creative. just like db has found a way to his audience independent music/art has long conquered the "long-tail" principle.

camelot unchained

back to the op

http://camelotunchained.com/ will kickstart in the next 2-3 days and will be the new benchmark in terms of commercialising kickstarter.

but but but with a bit of luck and some good decisons to be taken, mj will kill mmoprg for good and catapult the genre into the next phase. pvp people the globe over will rejoice ^^
