I was always under the impression that romanticized piracy was all about anarchistic freedom and individualism. So no, I don't see that being the kind of person to declare allegiance to anyone or thing but himself, his ship, and maybe his crew. Maybe.

the Privateers certainly aligned themselfs, but i think that even the most individual of the pirates had someone to hold their back, or they would have a hard time to sell their stolen booty.
