So kind of like Starship Troopers...
Reporting on in game public battles... when diff groups of players are about to kick off... or some new system with a palladium rush has been discovered?

"After 5 months of congregating the biggest pile of scum in the galaxy, the pirate league are ready to launch an attack on the Trading Federation of Cambridgeshire. Fleets are amassing near Diso... Be there to see it kick off. Are you bold enough to defend The Fed? Become a Citizen now."

"Found near Irquist... a massive untapped reserve of charisma. The Black Monks are on their way, but so are the Elite cabal of Kentucky. WIll you get there first? Or will Hot Ron's dodgy charisma draining emporium beat ya to it?"

Yes off course, anything that adds flavour to the game world. In FFE (did you play that game?) you had the rather good News Journals, with their different faction backed viewpoint on events in the game world etc.

So any expansion of that tradition would be a good one.

However. What i 100% categorically DON'T want is something to be a vector for advertising spam. No way. Never. Everything HAS to be about IN-GAME aspects to build a coherent and believable game universe. No Mac-Donalds Golden Arches, advert jingles etc. Not one. Just so that is clear.

As for the poll, hmm. I'm not sure, as both a Starship Trooper like news channel (Fox News like?) and Faction based channels could both be humorous in some instances. Again if you played FFE and know about the News Journals you will know what i mean. Would you expand your first post to include more detailed description on what you imagine each poll choice being about? I ask as i'm not sure enough yet to make a poll choice.

Not only should there be something like this in game, but I think its absolutely vital if we're to feel part of a living breathing and evolving universe.

I do think the Starship Troopers news propaganda aspect would work in ED - infact we could have 3 or 4 galactic news networks each with their own style and spin on things depending on what faction they're affiliated to.

I don't think it should be done via to out-of-game things like on the official ED forums or website though. Keep it in-game for the immersion effect. Access to the news should be available anywhere - not just in stations. Your ship should be able to pick up these networks on its comms system and give you a live-feed holographic news network pop up on the HUD when you're just chilling out sat in orbit around some distant world. If I'm LY's away from civilization I'd still like to know what's going on in the colonized parts of the galaxy. In saying that however, I think there has to come a point where you lose all contact with civilization once you get well out beyond the fringe systems as its equally important to feel remotely cut off and alone - depending how far out you've traveled. Having an out of game news network would kill that aspect.

Ah Fox News.. first time I saw it was on a business trip to New York many years ago. I thought it was a spoof News channel - like some of the sketches on the BBC :)
So the faction based spoofs would be only news items encouraging people to join the factions or propaganda as to why the other factions are really bad, and how they dont just think like we do.
The Starship Troopers would include other aspects too, not just faction based material - so could be letting folks know about a new area that has just been made available and that there are lots of asteroids to be mined - but would be done in a tongue in cheek Starship Trooper style.

+ Erimus -- good plan on being out of range - the quantum of solace in ED.
I only ever played the original Elite (and recently Oolite) one of the things that was a time waster - was not being able to press J until friendly shops were out of range. Either blast them or was a minute. Dont know how the new game plans to tackle this, but during these moments.. if I could click a button on the HUD and I'd get the latest news channel as a time filler (what to do with my life planner) that would be good.

I think the news will have a dark satirical feel anyway, so I think we will get exactly that propaganda feel to all news and the slants on it from each factions POV..

So I cant WAIT!"

So, dumbing down the game universe for the masses of joker pleps out there? No, it wouldn't be awesome, just annoying and immersion breaking (but you already know that don't you).

What do the SA always say? "Don't take ya gaming to seriously, it's all just for the lulz!" Yeah a tongue in check Elite news channel would fit in just nicely there.

No thank you, don't want it, don't need it.

The original Elite had planets famous for, among other things, their "edible arts graduates", "ancient loathing of sitcoms", and "great parking meters", along with combat ratings of "Mostly Harmless" and "Poor".

Frontier's manual continued the tradition: some of the trade goods descriptions, for instance, or lines like "if homicide is not your scene", or the other names for the 1MW and 5MW pulse lasers.

First Encounters had the 5 news journals, of which RIG (a parody of late 20th century celebrity magazines) and the Imperial Herald (a completely unashamed propaganda sheet) were both based around tongue-in-cheek humour - and even the more serious of the journals had the odd joke here or there. (RIG even generates a mission from one of its "tabloid appeal" entries). There was also the sarcastic shipyard owner in the manual.

If Elite: Dangerous is deadly serious all the time, it would be quite a break from the style of the previous games.

What do the SA always say?
Well, they've certainly been successful at getting you to see them everywhere. Perhaps you should recalibrate your detectors.

i don't think we should expect something like this, simply because it would be a lot of work to do... but let's have an hope for the further expansions of the game... who knows..

anyway,

i voted : Faction Based broadcasts only
that would be a limited job for the devs and i think it would resemble to the broadcasts seen in Babylon 5 (for example).

Hmm. OK. I went for 'Faction Based' as that is the most relevant to the gameworld AND it will no doubt all ready include some small elements of humour as is the tradition of Elite. I believe i read an update from one of the FD guys that some humour would be in Elite: Dangerous, so i think we are all covered here. I even think there has been talk about 'broadcasts' of info etc, which your poll and question may fall into?

If there was no humour in the game that would be totally 'immersion breaking' for me then I think I would have to rage quit and throw my toys out of the pram. How could they add any fun to a game, how dare they!!!

As long as nothing is written by any players who cannot spell, then some local or faction news may be interesting. I thought they were already doing this though. I am not sure if you would rip off Starship Troopers, although the Imperial Navy seems like the kind of regime with that kind of tone!
