Proposal Discussion Would All You Alpha Backers Complain If ..........

..... FD let the Premium Beta Backers Access to the Alpha 1.0 build ?

Of course after they have fixed the issue that nearly everyone is currently having with Alpha 3.0 with regards to the spinning Sidewinder/Corba loading screen :D

Ultimately it's FD's decision but just wanted to test the waters with you Alphas who paid £200

We Perm Backers would be 2 builds ( and when 4.0 is released 3 builds ) behind you.

I just think it will calm many who are getting into a frenzy while waiting for the Prem Beta release.

Alpha 1.0 was such a solid build & I don't envisage anyone asking for to much help with it so no one from FD would need to spend any time resolving any issue we might have.

Or am I being unrealistic ?

Thx for all your comments ;)

I don't see the point in them using the Alpha 1.0 its not like thats being worked on any more so little point of people playing it?

Alpha has only 1 more 'main' build to go through before hitting beta though? so the wait shouldn't be that long.

..tbh if it wasn't against the terms of service, I'd be tempted to give my alpha access to someone on here who needs it, its pretty much useless to me atm.

I think there's an issue of the impression a product makes to a wider audience.

I'm currently engaged in producing the audiobooks of five of the Elite fictions that are coming to market this year. Even though I have actor recordings in the can, I am reticent to allow clips of the recording out, since they lack treatment, sound effects, music and editing that will define the finished product.

The alpha has effectively been a fairly small group who are signed up for access to a work-in-progress game which is fairly unrepresentative of the finished product. Even within that focus group, there are individuals who cannot visualise and have patience for how the elements within the alpha will translate to the wider game. How much more so will a huge Beta group misunderstand the nature of the final game and so, potentially, damage the image of the final product.

FD have moved on huge steps from that initial alpha and I think it would be a mistake to still be sharing it with a new audience. It isn't really a question of maintaining exclusivity, in my mind.

Would All You Alpha Backers Complain If FD let the Premium Beta Backers Access to the Alpha 1.0 build ?

I´d be more worried about the 30K Gamma backers who expected to download a finished game in 3/2014.
Which is......... let me check on the calendar....... today?

Yes, open the flood gates for Alpha 1.0, but include every backer.

I think FD would be better off taking the Alpha 3 code and creating a single player only demo out of it.

Obviously multi-player is still being futzed with so that can't go out. And there are a lot of changes to Alpha 2/3 beyond multi-player.

Alpha 1 isn't really an accurate representation of the game anymore.

And producing a formal public demo removes any stigma of non-Alpha backers getting Alpha content.

Hopefully I'm not alone in hoping Alpha 3 isn't representative of the final game either? I don't think it should be a demo. At the moment, the "star systems" are just instances of old-fashioned multiplayer scenarios - very far from the open-world systems we should expect from Elite.

Still a long way to go with this game, y'all. Patience is a virtue. Expect to wait a long while for a game that is as good as ED promises to be.

Is there really a problem that needs to be solved here? I'm sure that many of us would love to get our hands on something playable ASAP, without paying the £200 for alpha access ... but as far as I'm aware the vast majority of backers are happy to wait for beta if that's what they've paid for, or increase their pledge for alpha access...

I'd guess that the logistics of supporting this would not be trivial in any case... And from FD's point of view it could be like creating a rod for their own backs.

It#s surely one build though, Alpha 1.0 is presumably no more as its all bundled into the new release. You want them to check who should be able to access what in the screens?

Nah. It's not that i am against a 1.0 build demo being available to Beta backers, I just dont see it as logically feasible right now.

Although I am not an Alpha backer, I see 3 problems with this:

1. Alpha1 was very restricted in scope.
2. FD would have to divert resources into creating and maintaining it, and into handling again any of the issues it had which were already reported.
3. It would do relatively little to satisfy players whilst setting up demand for Alpha 2 as soon as Alpha 4 is released.

A better solution would be for FD to be more open about what they're doing.

I would agree that an older version is not the game. Alpha is the current stage of testing model. It's with a smaller test group. It is inherently 'buggy' and usually very much a sub-set or small part of the over-all game (quite often).
I wouldn't recommend at this point getting into the Alpha because it's probably more than halfway complete but that is a person's choice and really the only way to access the alpha (other than watching videos since the hasn't been an NDA, etc.)
I think FD has enough on their plate focusing on the end-goal of making E: D
I don't think anyone wants them to slow down progress or take people off the progress (other than day-to-day business) to make the project more complex?

I agree with John.

I don't mind, even if it is Alpha 3.
But I think it isn't a good idea for Frontier.
They risk to face a lot of peolple complaining the game it's not finished.

I've often considered upgrading my premium beta and getting in now but due to my current financial position and the issues that the most recent build has I've decided to wait since it shouldn't be too long now until the premium beta is here. I know it is frustrating waiting for it especially after seeing all the great video's that are available on places like youtube and twitch but we just have to be patient which sadly for a lot of people, me included, can be a lot easier said than done.

I'm a Premium Beta, and I want my first hands-on experience of the game to be the full beta (along with balancing issues and ironing out final bugs) not the restricted scenarios of the Alpha builds.

I would advise patience and relish the build up of anticipation :)

FD might decide to release something (maybe) in order to stress test servers, a possible move, but that's for them ...

Answer to the OP; is YES, I would complain ..

I prefer to back the development (not only a matter of hard cash) and have faith in the game (which looks great in test) .. Let FD do what they need to release a game of good quality rather than rush it out ..

I (Commander E Winterwalker) am a (Beta) BACKER too ... and this is important because ..
I (the undersigned), a certain CMDR (WW, of no fixed abode) DEMAND ELITE QUALITY for my money!!!

Anything less and I'm off to Galactic Trading Standards ;

"elite" (noun) a group or class of persons [or a game] enjoying superior status

I'm a beta 2 and i say wait, pulling people off the main project to produce a demo at this point will just slow down production of the game itself.

the original timeline was only an estimate and if it takes longer to get it right i'm happy to wait until its ready.
