Would love some advice/guidance

Just in case, the passenger missions that are currently available are the sightseeing missions. At rep, these earn commonly between 4-11 million per trip. There's probably outlier cases that are higher.

These also don't occur at all stations though, so in your travels its worth just popping by and seeing whats there. If you already see missions for 4-5 million available its a pretty good sign that the best ones will come once you've ranked up with the stations factions. I haven't tracked what bgs attributes cause a station to be higher paying or not, but i've had more luck in outposts than bases or coriolis etc, if that helps.

Also, these require decent jump range as you should expect 3-400 ly distances for the expensive ones. Might be an excuse to dip your toes in engineering at least for the fsd. Its the first one (felicity farseer) and the rank unlocks and modules should and will carry over post patch.

As someone who has 2000+ hours on XBox and just put Horizons on to an old PC commander, I loaded up the game with 10 million in the bank and an a-rated asp from 2016, also NO mats/data or engineers unlocked.

If by the time 3.0 drops you'll have quite a few modules to upgrade, you may want to unlock some of the engineers and get some modules to G5 beforehand so that you start with a new G4 format to be upgraded to G5. Grade 1 to Grade 5 on every module every time sounds horrific to me even if it is potentially easier (think multiple weapons/boosters/HRPs/SCBs per ship). Regardless, I'd say you want to unlock Farseer at least and get your FSD upgraded to make money beforehand.

Personally I'm now unlocking engineers to get their requirements out of the way, and to upgrade a fully G5 engineered combat ship.

Now the money. Get allied as quickly as possible with local factions. Look for decent paying missions when you're neutral which should be indicative of good paying missions once allied. Here's what I did:

Went to Gang Yun (medium pad) - fed rep system. Boom data between there and HIP 64706. No need to stack, you'll get 20 each way (maybe need to include Byggvi on return leg or mode switch at HIP). HIP station is 24k ls away so each boom data will give between 40k and 140k each (depending on materials/data rewards - lots of high grade mats). You'll get around 2-3m per return trip and 3-4 trips per hour (120-160 boom data missions).

Once allied, sightseeing missions are between 5m (mostly aimless) for single hop upto 28m for 4 hop (elite). At allied, I'd take the 7-14m one or two hop missions, or the 4 hop for 28m (1 hop ~90LY, 2nd ~160, 3rd and 4th upto 360LY). The 28m typically took just under an hour. The 7-14m 15-30 minutes. My ASP at the time could jump ~40-45LY with a loaded passenger cabin. Dolphin would be a good cheapish alternative though it's the cost of the A-rated modules not the hull. Remember LYR 15% discount for ships/modules. My ASP setup:

Class 6 passenger cabin
Class 5 fuel scoop
2G planetary vehicle (though usually scanned from the ship, so not required)
ADS+DSS (or ADS and a docking computer)
Size 3 shield
Size 3 cargo rack

Alternative to this depending on your ship is to check out the VIP 'Transport to' missions around some of the stations a large distance from jump in point. Downside is that number of cabins dictate number of missions and potential profit, you'll want a shield since passengers will fail mission on any hull damage (think slighting glance leaving station), you'll also need a cargo rack for those stupid commodities. Also prefers allied and elite rated missions, and watch out for the 'passenger may be wanted in multiple systems' which can be more frequent than not. Oh and it's BORING sitting in SC.

TL;DR boom data & fed rep until locally allied with all factions followed by sightseeing missions, or jump on the long distance from jump-in bandwagon. Gang Yun system will give easy rep and a decent payout whilst getting to allied, followed by a more than decent 20-30m per hour doing sightseeing tours. Doesn't have to be Gang Yun, I'm currently on the lookout for similar systems closer to the central bubble. My main criteria now has become 'does the system have an easyish way to get allied and does it offer decent 3-5m sightseeing missions at neutral/cordial reputation).

Well, I scraped my way back to Jameson Memorial and, to my surprise, my FAS was much better equip then I thought, netting me ~55m when I sold it.

So, what do I do with these creds? Of course I bought a Python, fit it with a fuel scoop and 132 economy passenger seats! And best of all, I have just enough to cover insurance should the worst happen. Going to be giving these passenger missions a shot, see how it goes.

Did a bit of fooling about on a ship builder, and a shielded Python WITH a fuel scoop and Basic discovery scanner, holds the same amount of people as a shielded T7 WITHOUT a fuel scoop (I consider the scoop and BDS mandatory on any ship when wandering to unfamiliar territory)

We'll see how this goes!

Make the scanner advanced, the difference is, basic scans 500ly into a system and the advanced has an infinite range. (which is not true, or it would be able to scan the galaxy in one hit. It will scan the whole system, giving you a better exportation income/rank doing exactly the same thing, each time you enter a new system.

Engineers: I have not touched it and don't feel the need for it against NPCs. To me, it is for levelling the playing field, in PvP. That said, I like to savour what my ship can do now and then; improve it.

It's been a pretty long time since I've played, and I'm kinda wanting to hop back in. I do have a few questions though, as I know things have changed up quite a bit. First off the line: Should I bother with engineers now or wait until the new patch changes?

They are worth bothering with. Think of them as the next upgrade beyond A-rating.

Some of them are a pain to unlock (Palin is one). Most of them are not. Even grade 1 upgrades can make a noticeable difference.

I never bothered with them before, I was wildly sick of grinding by the time they came out, but I'm really thinking of giving them a go this time around. On the same note, what's a good way to get started with the Engineers and progress? Like, who should I start with, where do I get their garbage and what not.

This is the guide I started with. Find the initial Engineers that upgrade the stuff you think you will use most, and start with them. All of the beginning engineers have something that is likely to be useful to you. Even grade 1 upgrades can be a significant improvement. It can turn your cheap D-rated module into something equivalent to an A-rated. They are not just an end-game thing.

Next thing, I know this is a really temperate question, but stow those dank Musk Flamethrowers if you would... For some one sitting ~30m credits, what's some ways to make creds?

Passenger missions. I tried a bunch of different ways, but this paid off the most. I have done individual passenger missions 1 system away that paid 5 million cr before. They are also very stackable. The trick is that you need to get settled into a cluster of systems that are populated and close...they will have passenger missions to each other. The best missions come after you are allied with the station (also great because allied stations rarely scan you, which means illegal passengers are viable).

Dump passengers off at the destination, and take new passenger missions back to your starting station. Rinse and repeat. Avoid Adventure missions...their turnover rate is slow AF even though they seem to pay a lot. Ignore any passenger demands...for short range transport missions, they will not be on your ship long enough to complain to the degree that it would matter to you.

And before anyone else says it...yes they were nerfed a little recently. Doesn't matter. They are still really good. 8-10 million per run is normal for me, even after the nerf.

I dont mind if it's long or tedious, so long as it's efficient. I want build a value of ~125m at least so I can get into an FDL, or if I can endure it, 200m so I can finally kit out a Python (A ship I've wanted since Day 1). I know people gripe about "fast credits takes the fun out of the game" or something along the lines, but TBH, I find making credits to be the most tedious and stressful part of the game. Once I settle into one of these ships, I'll feel much more at ease to sit back and enjoy the game. I really, really want to just stop having to care about credits. I have no real motivation to get one of the big 3, so Python/FDL are kinda my endgame in this particular area.

I am not one of those that will criticize you. My goals were even higher (I was grinding for a Fed Corvette). The Python was just a stepping stone to the ship I really wanted. Nothing wrong with trying to optimize for a goal. If money is the goal, ignore data and cargo missions and just churn passenger transport missions that are close by.
