Would one GTX 980 be enough for 60+ FPS at 4K?

I have a I7 4930K also. Been thinking of getting the Philips BDM4065UC 40 inch 4K.

I run the same processor and have a single GTX 980, also have 8gb corsair dominator ram running at 2700Mhz and an SSD.

I use DSR so the game renders in 4k then downsamples to 1080p. The game runs very smoothly even with all settings set to maximum, only sometimes just dipping below 60fps within stations.

This says a 980 comes in under 60fps at 4K.

I looked over that and I have to say it doesn't represent my experience at all.

I think this makes me really start to think I should not take too much notice of random benchmark sites.

Both AMD and Nvidia are releasing new cards this spring, pick up something in the $300 range until then, pocket the rest until the new cards are out and add to it then buy one of them. There's supposed to be a 40-60% increase in performance across the board this generation.

I've tried that, works great everywhere except stations, I decided to use 1440p downsampled to 1080p instead as it's smoother but looks pretty much the same on my monitor

it's still playable in stations at 4K, but you can tell it's not as smooth

Same here I downscale 4k to a 1080p screen on max settings it sits at 78 average but can drop down to 30's in stations or when very close to a sun! Very playable imo

No it won't. You need dual gfx setup to run at that speed. Even then you might have problems.
Don't take my word for it - I so much wanted to do this my self, but after reading a lot about it on the net I decided that it would just cost to much in order to set it up.
Take an hour or two and do a Google research. You will be amazed over how much gfx power 4k actually needs.

do not go 4k.. honestly 4K is nice but go ultra wide for a better game experience.. you will benefit far more from it!

example: http://www.lg.com/us/ultrawide-monitors

It gives you an improved 3 screen setup feeling without bevels in between.

feel free to check the gamer(s) reviews of it.. and you will see what i mean.

Ofcourse you have to realise that 3 screens will end up being just as expensive as this monitor.. then again if you can affort an 980 that shouldn't be an issue either.

IF you want to go for a tripple screen setup go for an lower res ultrawide in the middle and 2 smaller side screens.
The 34 inch (its not very high just very wide) comes in 2 resoltutions:
2560x1080 Which is ideal for lower gfx cards or as setup in combo with 2 sidescreens.
OR
3440x1440 which is nearly 4k Resolution but in wide screen (better for game immersion!)

I own a 2560x1080 myself, and can positilvely say i enjoy it every day.. (I wont look back till a new rig + consumer Rift comes along).
The 34 inch does not look immense and doesn't disturb the living room.

PS. I do not own any stock in ultrawide technology .. :) just personal experience .. if you want to enjoy the game most without going rift that is.

In 2560*1440 I get between 75 and 175FPS. In stations its between 75 and 95. And thats with everything maxed. So I am sure 4K at 60 is possible. I use a EVGA GTX980 SC.

That's not pure 4k - pure 4k is 3840 x 2160
Tweaktown done a good review and tests.
.
2 980's in SLI will get 60 fps most times at 4k with a few exceptions, one of them being Tomb Raider where you need 3 way 980 SLI to get that consistent 60 FPS
however for nearly every game out there, 2 way SLI with 980's should get you to that magic 60 fps number with quite a bit of eye candy, but 1 x 980 will not.

I run this game at 4k and 60FPS on a single Asus 980 Strix which is a mild factory overclock.
I go slightly under 60FPS in stations but otherwise it is steady.
I also have a G-sync monitor so even when the frame rate drops, it's still smooth.

To put it bluntly, the 980 is a complete beast and makes everything else look stupid (apart from the 970 which is a complete bargain).

I am running two 980's in sli with i7 4930 on a samsung 55 inch 4k tv through Hdmi 2 connection and have no problems at all with a constant 60 fps and anything upto 170 - 180 fps with vsync off.
As already stated one card is not enough to run 4k smoothly.

Can you link us to a video showing your steady 60fps @ 3840 x 2160 please? Even though technically this is UHD and not 4K, we'll ignore that.

I'm running at 4K on a single GTX980 and easily get >60fps in most situations. I know it drops below that while in the stations and there are probably a few other instances, but I never notice much. Most of the time it's up around 90 fps.

4k is such a commercial hype imho...

Ultrawide is the way to go in my opinion for gameing. (especially at resolutions of 3440 x 1440)

Probably a ti version and 8gb versions of the 9 series.

9 series is king at the moment, but as is always the case this is a crown that can only be warn for a finite period :)

Another thing the OP might want to consider is that Oculus CV1 is likely to require stable 90hz refresh at 1440p... I think this could explain why we are still without a consumer release of the rift.
