Would this encourage you to purchase more paintjobs?

Hi CMDRs,

With the Chromed and Golden paintjobs in the shop at the moment I thought it would be an ideal time to propose an initiative that might benefit both the players and FDev.

I've made a small mod (UNRELEASED) that enables you to restore the original 2017 reflective Chrome & Gold paintjobs. The new ones still look great (Chromed and Golden), but are relatively matte compared to the previous versions. Whenever anyone posts an image of the old versions there's always envious replies wishing FDev would re-release the originals. But I feel that's never going to happen.

I'd like to get the community's opinion, and ideally FDev's, whether the mod would encourage players to purchase the Chromed and Golden paintjobs?

A few extra notes about the proposed mod:

  • It doesn't alter any game files (the modding software 3Dmigoto sits between the game and the GPU)
  • It's client-side only, so others won't see the mod (you can't make a stealth ship .. in fact, using a metallic paintjob probably makes you more visible)
  • The mod doesn't offer any competitive advantage
  • It doesn't require installation of EDHM (I can make a standalone version)
  • It only affects Chromed and Golden paintjobs
  • It looks awesome :) and screenshots look incredible
  • You can use a keybind to adjust the level of reflectiveness, from Default Elite up to fully reflective, and anywhere in between.

I'd really appreciate your opinions, whether they be positive or negative, thanks!

Here's a short video to demonstrate the different levels of reflectiveness that I assigned to a keybind: Default, 1/2 shiny, and full shiny

PS. Sorry about the poor camera-work :) I only had a keyboard and mouse today to control the camera

What would convince me to buy more paintjobs is the ability to gift them to other people. Used to spend an absolute fortune before Arx on our event prizes... Now we're also spending a fortune, but not for Arx, as we can't give away the cosmetics as prizes :(

Thanks for blast from past soundtrack :)

If shiny is your thing then that Beluga certainly looks like it has been polished to perfection.
Now if you could do something similar so that Midnight Black is black instead of Charcoal Grey, and Azure looked like it did in Horizons... because FDev don't seem to care.

Yeah the Midnight Black can be modded to look similar to the completely black ship in Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy

"It was so extremely dark that it was hard to make out the shape, and it was almost impossible to tell how close you were standing to it. Zaphod commented that the light "seemed to fall into it", and Ford said that his eyes seemed to slide off it. Zaphod repeatedly attempted to reach out and stroke the outside of the craft and feel the surface, however his hand was stopped, as it was totally frictionless. Zaphod called it "one mother of a mover"."

Here's a demo, but whether it's allowed to be modded only FDev can answer

The lack of gleam in Iridescent Gleam has been a constant irritation to me in EDO (which FD then trolled by putting it on sale again :D ). Personally I've given up buying Arx for the foreseeable future (as I can't foresee when, if ever, EDO will work properly in VR). Though I am tempted by merchandise every now and again (when on sale).

As I understand it, not screwing with Arx cosmetics is one of Frontier’s rules for mods, so this will never see public release.

I prefer the original Chrome and Gold liveries, it's a shame that I can't get them anymore.
This mod would be a good alternative, if FDev would allow it.
I would probably buy more Chromed and Golden livery if this mod existed.

And If you post a screenshot sporting a such paintjob on one of your ships, how would people know are one of the lucky owners of the original reflective Chromed/Golden paintjobs or just a shader manipulator?

Anyway, you should ask this question to FDev and see what they say.
Maybe those paints were not 2017 exclusives and they'll have nothing against it.

However, they may think it could eventually impact sales of paintjobs if people are freely able to mod those paintjobs.
I dont know, just saying... 🤷‍♂️

I was really looking forward to getting some chrome paints, but they don’t look anywhere near as good as the old version, unfortunately I’ve been seeing that with quite a few arx cosmetics. Several of them don’t even look the same as they do in the 4.0 Odyssey store pics.

What would convince me to buy more paintjobs, is if the paintjob for each ship is split up into sections, and I could re-colour each section, click "Submit" (or other appropriate word) button, which then goes through programming magic (ie no human needed) and generates a paintjob for that ship I can buy.

Another thing that might get me to buy more paintjobs is if Frontier actually improved the website to have more options for filters and sorting IF ONLY SOMEONE WOULD SUGGEST IT IN THE SUGGESTIONS SECTION ON THE FORUM
