Would this PC system run Elite: Dangerous fast in 4k?

Beautiful machine. The price is high. I think it would be cheaper if you buy the components at retail, and assemble the machine yourself

If you send the machine to me I can test it for you... :p

I would say that machine looks more than capable, the GPU's being the things that would make the biggest difference.

As above you could probably get away with less in some other areas (read that as: CPU's have not changed much over the years)

wow, that is a sweet machine, and is lighting.

My only question would be regarding the memory on your graphics cards.

will 3gb be enough ram for 4K gaming?

(It may well be, I am not sure, 4k is beyond me sadly!!!.....)

Remember with SLI just because both cards have 3GB it does not double the effective memory pool.

In the nvidia camp the 6gb titans/titan blacks are really expensive and from what I have read (i have not used an AMD card in ages - since they were ATI in fact!!) crossfire is still a little flaky compared to SLI.

If gaming at full bubble 4K is your goal, as annoying as it sounds, it may be an idea to wait till the high end maxwell cards launch. Nvidia may offer some cards with a little more memory on then.

EDIT, it seems to be as I feared.

"Whether or not you risk hitting a RAM wall, therefore, may depend on when you intend to shift to 4K gaming. For most people, the answer to this question is: “No time soon.” And that’s important. If you want to move to 4K play right now, then the AMD Radeon R9 290 family, with its 4GB of RAM, is going to be the better bet. But if you don’t, the 3GB aboard the GTX 780 Ti is going to keep you happy for quite some time to come. Buying the GPU now for 4K performance in 2-3 years makes no sense, by then, modern cards will offer much better performance and price points."

I should have said running "at maximum settings" and 60 fps or above :)
If I cut back to one graphics card, rather than two, would that be enough?

Not buying until the end of the year. Hopefully the price will drop by then.

So could buy a cheaper CPU? Hmmm. Thanks. Will keep that in mind.

Ta. Just looked up Maxwell cards. Didn't know they were even coming. In that case, I'll definitely be waiting to Q4. Want to wait for the final release of the game anyway. Q4 is probably when it will arrive...

4k gaming needs a lot of oomph under the hood. Some food for thought:

When running the Heaven Benchmark on the 3840x2040 resolution...

A single GTX TITAN (6gb) averages around 7-10FPS.
Two GTX TITAN averages around 15-25FPS.
Three GTX TITAN averages around 25-30FPS.

Hopefully Maxwell will be enough to deal with the problem.

Currently 4K is truly for the Elite of bank accounts

:)

I tried OR. Was ok, but not fantastic. They would have to really up the resolution to make it the preferred way to play (in my opinion!). I think they're aiming for 1080p. I guess we'll know when it arrives for real..

I read an article over the weekend where their head guy said that whilst the crystal cove was "essentially feature complete" the consumer version would have certain improvements, inc both better head tracking still AND better resolution.

So who knows, maybe CV1 will actually be better than 1080p.

So long as we can choose 1080p if we want that is fab news, intheory we can play at 1080 and then as our hardware improves perhaps we could up it to a little higher

Correct answer = who cares! we are only using monitors until the rift hd set is available.

He's got a point! :)

I wouldn't go for SLI. You pay twice, but don't get twice the speed. Sometimes even worse than a single card!

SLI and Crossfire are just not solid enough, and not worth the extra cash.

If you can hold out for Nvidia's 800 series (880gtx), then that is what I would do.

I'm in the beta backers, and buying a desktop/htpc when that goes live, so I'll probably have to settle for the 780gtx.

ehehe probably quite true, although that may be still a way off and even more demanding than 4K (true OR HD, meaning >=1440p per eye).

To the OP: If you are going to buy the system by the end of the year, ask then :p. Things change a lot in HW industry, specially best buy recommendations.

Currently, if one ignores the crypto currency induced AMD price gouge in the US, the "best buy for 4k" (meaning the one with most ability) would be dual watercooled and overclocked R9 290X. Tomorrow? who knows...

Anyway, by the end of the year may be a good time to buy new GPUs or a terrible one, depending on how the 20nms introduction goes...

If I was willing to purchase a SLI 780ti rig this wouldn't be it.

It would have a tv card, a second HD (hybrid), blueray, wireless lan and, for that price probably 2 gsync monitors as-well.

But that's just me.

4k gaming sounds fun though.

You'll have very little time for testing of any kind this week Kerrash what with your up coming visit to the gaming bafta's you lucky devil :p

Seriously though I personally think that an i7 processor is overkill in any gaming machine. As long as you have a good gpu or even 2 in a crossfire\sli configuration then a core i5 is plenty powerful enough for Elite or any other game you could possibly think of.

Really though, overkill is what a top end gaming rig is all about.

Not that you are wrong, the sensible approach is to stay away from bleeding edge hardware.
