Would you pay a subscription for ED?

If the game is to be continued in terms of development then I can't see how FD will be able to do this without raising other revenues other than new purchase revenue. Only so many people will buy the game and normally a single game title has little further development other than maybe a skeleton team tasked with a post release patch or two - and then that's a wrap.

So - as far as I see it, if we want new ships and new enemies and (god forbid) planet landings and FPS, and we want FD to keep developing and adding to the ED universe then we might have to put our hands in our pockets and look at paying a subscription of some sort.

Or are there other ways of doing this?

Aint nothing for free.

I might consider paying a subscription to this forum alone... specifically funding the reduction of posts asking this question :)

If paying a sub granted a separate open only character/simulation as well as server side hosting for said open only simulation I would certainly pay a monthy sub.

Thats my usual reaction to those threads (yes, there more of those):

They could get a lot of money through the "game extras" store. Skins, "boobleheads", die cast ship models: there is a LOT of ways to get the money from the Elite fan. I would throw the money at FD myself, so far I have bought everything I liked in the store.

Subscription is the plague of the industry.

Well they have income from the xbox version, then the PS4 version, income from skins, income from DLC and income from other games.

I think whats more likely to happen when we reach that point in time is that the game gets an offline version and it becomes SP only.

No, in fact I wouldn't have bought this beauty at all if there was a subscription charge. I might pay for DLC missions, paint jobs and real life t shirts or mugs but definitely no pay to play or to win.

The continued development of new content will be funded by the fact that they will be paid expansions.

As for server maintenance, I believe the server load isn't actually that high. From my knowledge the server is used for matchmaking in instances but the data is sent peer to peer.
