Would You Play It? single-player

You probably would. I know I would - a single-player adventure set in the Elite universe is what I’m talking about here.

And it wouldn’t surprise me if this isn’t already in the long-term plans. Elite: Dangerous has so many assets, and great potential, not to mention a solid fan base, so this almost seems a logical Next Big Step.

The real question is How Big Should This Be?

We know we can do Galaxy-sized, we’re doing it now. But would we Need all that much space for a single-player story adventure?

I’m inclined to think a single sector would be more than ample space.

We’d just need to get a few things hammered out here - bipedal locomotion and atmospheric operations, namely, to form a complete single player experience.

What say the rest of you? Let’s talk about something different for a while.

Ideally, a single-player Elite with several modes - story-driven mode, with lots of missions, or sandbox mode in which you can roam around and do what you please, for example. I'd buy such a game.

I mean, isn't that basically the X series? I'd be down, provided there's that kind of depth of variation of ships, economics, etc as well.

The original was single player (long before internet access) and seemed plenty big in those days - and had pirates, Thargs etc. (fond memories of heading for a tation at top speed to get to the no-fire zone with some hull left in the ship)

Yes, I'd take the new game, maybe one sector sized (assuming the current 42) would be plenty. Legs wouldn't bother me over much but proper atmospherics, I'd like that :)

None of the games I'm currently playing require my PS4 to be connected to the Internet, and I'm having an absolute blast.

I'd thought Frontier purposefully moved away from single player for ED after Elite3:FFE for the shared mmo verse.

But if there was an Elite franchise lore spin-off single player strategy RTS, adventure, management sim, or RPG game set in a station or on an Elite world, sure I'd play it.

If I am not mistaken, the previous Frontier games had simulated the whole galaxy as well, maintenance being the only limit if no cheats were used.
There has to be a good reason for walls in the game world, not just the largest part being permit locked. Especially in a single player game, were there could be less limits since nobody affects some other players game. If you can see the stars beyond your gameplay bubble, you might want to visit them, because they are already there in the code, if the stellar forge is the basis. Why should it not be?

The only way I think the player can be put on a specific path is to be a Cmdr or at least not the ship owner. For example a Fighter pilot would never reach a different destination in a convenient time frame and led along a certain quest line.

I'd play it if it isn't constrained by always online and MP stuff. AKA: is moddable. Preferrably if it gets rid of the engineer crap so I don't need to bother with it.

Solo is not the same thing I’m getting at here. I’m talking story-based, real narrative-driven multi-Open Worlds, not just playing online by yourself.

I would. I think it'd be a good way to expose people to the backstory.

How many players do you think there are who know what happened to the previous emperor? How many players know what happened to Salime? Who was the first person who encounter a Thargoid (in the 3300s)? Did someone do something to trigger the return of the Thargoids?

These are all potentially very interesting stories that could be told through simple single-player campaigns. And the existence of those campaigns would give us all a shared history that we currently lack.

Something like Squadron 42 from Cash Citizen?

Yes, but actually delivered. :D

And yes, as long as it'd be well done, i'd be ready to buy and play it. I mean, i'd imagine it to be a story/campaign in the world of ED, but disconnected from the main game. That would be basically the only important thing in my eyes: it could easily use the same world, ships and engines, but should not be connected to the main game. We don't need a whole horde of "chosen ones" in the main game. It just doesn't fit the game there.

Given the chance, I'd like to play ED with ED's flight model and travel modes, along with some of the aspects of X4: Foundations like their ships (and the building/buying aspect), crews, fleets, etc. to name a few. Just a big sandbox.

No online mode required, no forced updates, and no mmo nonsense. And make the new exploration mechanics from ED as well as the 'space legs' from X4 optional with a config switch please. :)

i think i'd rather see Fdev deliver on their completed vision for Elite: Dangerous before they divert resources towards another project.
Im expecting season 4 to be the next big thing in ED... and im expecting game changing.
If season 4 lands flat like a half pumped up inflatable doll thrown onto a damp bed, my time with ED will come to an end.

I am all for an in depth single player experience but I can't help but feel the OP is simply a rehash of ideas that has been shared many times before?
