Would You Play It? single-player

Yes. Been wanting and requesting this for some time now.

An optional DLC single player story campaign that uses existing assets and mechanics to tell an epic story centred around the player, with all the cinematics, cut-scenes, and top shelf voice acting you'd expect.

I agree that an FPS module and atmospheric landings would definitely make this more viable as well as interesting, but it could probably still be done quite well and successfully with the game as it is.

For people who don't really want that from Elite, well they're not forced to purchase it, and it shouldn't include any new ships or game features (unless they're also applied to the sandbox game for everyone), just a great story and gameplay, so sandbox-only players don't get excluded. But this would benefit all Elite players, because it would add a revenue stream for Frontier, which they could use to keep enhancements coming for the sandbox game.

I'd really like to know if Frontier have had any serious discussions about going down this path.

If they have, we won't know, until they announce something. But I do want to stress, I'm not talking about some sort of DLC, but something that is fully stand-alone.

You probably would. I know I would - a single-player adventure set in the Elite universe is what I’m talking about here.

And it wouldn’t surprise me if this isn’t already in the long-term plans. Elite: Dangerous has so many assets, and great potential, not to mention a solid fan base, so this almost seems a logical Next Big Step.

The real question is How Big Should This Be?

We know we can do Galaxy-sized, we’re doing it now. But would we Need all that much space for a single-player story adventure?

I’m inclined to think a single sector would be more than ample space.

We’d just need to get a few things hammered out here - bipedal locomotion and atmospheric operations, namely, to form a complete single player experience.

What say the rest of you? Let’s talk about something different for a while.

It was called offline mode. :(

Elaborately hand crafted story missions and the DLC titled :

Elite Origins: the tales and mysteries from the sectors.

Out of curiosity why does it matter, DLC or standalone.? Your insistence that you are only interested in people's views of a separate product and not a DLC makes no sense to me. The only people this would affect are LEP owners ..... Do you really have such an issue with them that you want the to get even less value in their purchase?.

The fighter game I now have forgotten the name of was distributed standalone as well. It makes no sense to have a SP that has to make concessions to the MP architecture and gameplay. I wouldn't play an amputated SP that is just ED with the MP turned off.

Yes, that would make the game available to people who don't own Elite, which would be better for revenue.

I would suggest three things though:
1. Owners of Elite should have any reputation/influence/credits/permits/etc. gained in the campaign added to their sandbox account, including people who later purchase Elite.
2. Owners of Elite who also purchase the single player campaign should have it available to run from the Elite menu, as it's better for integration into what will become an eco-system if single-player campaigns are continued.
3. People who purchase the story campaign should get a 1-3 month free trial of the sandbox with the current seasons/expansions.

As the campaign is going to be using the Elite engine and all the mechanics and assets, and connecting to the Frontier servers, it would probably make sense from a technical perspective that the actual Elite game will be integral to the single-player campaign, so it will likely be a composite part of the software package. In other words, Elite would be sitting under the campaign anyway, so cross-promotion may as well be pushed.
