CQC should have been what conflict zones are - except without the arcades power-ups. Basically, you sign up for a side, you get thrown into an SLF, and are launched out of a cap ship. Lots of hull losses leads to the Navy being less willing to give you a seat, and good piloting results in a choice of fighters.
Anyway, it’s been proposed before, along with conflicts and battles taking place around stations (yeah, so traders actually have to run the gauntlet, but payouts would be greatly increased). At the very least, conflict zones should be around some sort of asset - it makes no sense to be fighting over an empty patch of space in th middle of nowhere.

Yeah but you don't get to join them and get an airplane. You get to go through OTS and then flight school. Then you get years of training then maybe you'll see combat.I've advocated something similar to this in the past. The Air Force doesn't require me to provide my own airplane when I join them to fight in a war. It would make challenging (where you can lose) combat fun without the added cost of rebuy after rebuy after rebuy, and it would remove the terrible imbalance in PvP.
