Would you prefer exploration data was linked to ship and not you?

Just a thought. As it seems impossible to remain rank 5 with Li Yong-Rui and do those big 10k + exploration trips, or shorter but simply remaining out there some time, would you prefer your data remained on your ship. So you could hop into another ship, one more suited for combat\trading, and do your pp duties in that? Before swapping back to sell up and have the 200% benefit.

Easy enough to stay in solo for safety until your back at rank 5 I suppose, but that doesn't really seem like a option for all, some like to play in open only.

Haven't done it myself, but I hear of others doing the long trip, then coming back and buying their way to rank 5. Then when selling the explore data from a long trip, the bonus from that more than offsets the cost of buying your rank. Of course the main problem with that is you need to have enough cash to buy your way up in the first place.

I didn't even know about that. Bet many others don't either. I don't mind the risk. Then again, I'm exploring in a fully combat kitted Python, so the risk of dying in combat is relatively low overall.

How does one buy oneself rank 5? The weekly 50 million credits alone should cover that cost surely? I always thought merits are earned by killing ships of other powers exclusively?

Well you just pay the 200k or what ever it is to skip the 30 min wait for the delivery tat. But even if you do that you still need to spend about 4 hours flying around dropping it all off, I think. Its 100 million, I think.

Mhh, thanks. In that case, I'll rather keep conservatively away from PP and take the good, old prices.

Yes, for some 6 days is enough to go far and get back. Personally I don't have that kind of play time. 4k in a night would be about the max for me, especially if I'm having a proper look around, not just jumping and honking. Plus I like to explore the outer of the peach, so that's a 22k trip at least just to get to the patch you want to study, much more if your off to the far side. I'm sure I'm not alone with this.

I guess after hitting rank 5 you could work on a buffer for the decay and hope you don't have too much to do to regain rank.

In fact, does anyone have a vague idea of how much you loose after like a month away?

I think I remember someone says their rank more or less disappeared after a 2 week vacation where they were unable to play.

You can be gone 13+ days actually, since the rank 5 lasts until the end of the NEXT cycle after you earn it.

So you simply buy your rank 5 on a friday. Set off that same day and return on or before the 2nd thursday. Your rank 5 will still be in effect. Sell you data, use your 50M CR govt paycheck to rebuy rank 5. Rinse. Repeat. You only need to return once every two weeks. Getting to the farthest edges of the galaxy is still possible if you have an Anaconda or play for 3-4 hours day in an Asp. If your play time is more limited you can still get to Sag A* and back or do a neutron field sweep.

Well thats not quite as bad as i'd thought then. 3 or 4 weeks out might not hit too hard. Still would prefer data on ship tho

If you're that desperate for credits then exploration is probably not the way to get them, even if you can maintain the PP bonus credits.

Not desperate no, but surly nice for explorers to be able to take advantage of the only pp bonus geared towards them. Other professions can with no real issue, bounty hunters for example are making a killing.
I'm not one to scream for balance and fairness, it just felt like a simple solution for the dilema you face if you are rank 5 and then want to get back out there.
Having to buy your way back to 5 and then stay in solo for a bit feels, scratty, messy.

This would not be a good idea for all those explorers who return home and then switch to a ship more suitable for the bubble whilst travelling around selling data to the minor factions they want to support, gain permits from, etc.

The actual issue that needs to be addressed is how to have a perk that is suitable for explorers. The current one just isn't fit for purpose and we should loudly say so, not try and find ways of getting around it. It would make more sense to have something like a fixed perk for Li Yong-Rui that you get just for being pledged, eg a 100% bonus for all ELWs and terraformable first discoveries with the perk only applying to those actually discovered whilst pledged (so you can't just turn up at the end of a trip, pledge, earn the bonus & then de-plegde). The bonus comes along with the inherent risk of being pledged. You could have higher tiers of bonus based on how many ELWs and CFTs you had handed in over the last month. Whatever. Just make the mechanics and timeframes something that reflects what exploration is.
