Fiction Writer Reporting For Duty [COMPETITION]

I missed the boat. Sorry. Traffic.

In truth it was a profound measure of despondency in the space sim industry, Eve Online notwithstanding, that caused me to miss the rebirth of Elite. A long term fan since the original and lover of all things cosmic, I paid my dues and joined premium beta; even though I currently do not own a PC.

I am a big fan of putting pen to paper and creating worlds within worlds. So, in honour of rediscovering my childhood, I would love to delve into writing an Elite-based novel.

However, where do I stand as I am not a Kickstarter backer and did not trump up the readies to have permission for such a venture? Is it too late? Can I still opt in?

Could anyone with the knowledge please let me know. It would be much appreciated.

COMPETITION TIME

To prove my sincerity, I pose a task for myself:

I have booked myself a week off work and will dedicate it to writing a short story in the Elite universe. I only require you good people, the mob, to call out the following as you see fit:

1) A character name (be sensible)
2) A system currently in beta
3) A prop of your choosing. It can be anything within the boundaries of good taste.

I will select a winner from the most inventive of replies and craft my story around these three elements.

CLOSING DATE IS SUNDAY 8TH OF JUNE

If this humble beginning blossoms into a future of Elite-based prose, there will be many other competitions ahead.

If you've read this far down thank you, good luck and fly safe.

Here are my suggestions:

1) Eslin Michael Wright
2) LP-264 (I think that's the one in beta right now)
3) Handheld hull de-gausser

I can answer this as it's something I have been asking about all the way back during the Kickstarter.

The official line is (and this came from Michael Brookes to me personally after I asked) that as you did not pledge for the official writer's pack, anything you write will be fan fiction. You should make it clear it is fan fiction and not official Elite fiction and you cannot profit financially from it.

Now, you have timed things just right as Allen Stroud recently posted that he was going to tidy up the writer's bible they have been using and make it available on the Fantastic Books Publishing website. If you are interested in that, I'd suggest you watch for Allen posting about it.

I hope this helps.

Welcome to the forums Obosi.

The Elite Kickstarter and writer's packs associated with it were part of the reward pledges offered during the end of 2012. I was the last recipient of a writer's pack with my Kickstarter ending in March 2013.

However, we have no idea what Frontier's plans are for new fiction. There are also some projects which remain 'at large' - Elite Chronicles, Elite: Survivor and The Cost of Exploration. We don't know what will happen with those projects and the license they each purchased.

See above. Now is the time to write and get to know the community. Who knows what opportunities will appear in the future. Do you have any previously published work? If so, drop some links and let people take a look.

Its also worth popping along to Lavecon 2014 if you're UK based as a lot of the writers, editors and Frontier folk will be there - http://laveradio.com/lavecon.aspx

Thanks Alien. I wouldn't necessarily describe this as a writer's bible. I'm not going to be revealing information from the Writer's Forum, that's Frontier's information and not within my purview. What I will do (and have said) is I'll produce the style guide we used for the books and it contains a few examples that would guide any would be writers in the future.

I stand corrected. :)
