I'm in a similar boat, set out into the black to try the new mechanics out, using a passenger mission as my target point. (About 240 jumps out I think?)
Learning some tricks with the scanners made it more engaging... (Can't find that last high metal? Ok delve into a gas giant, it's probably around that etc). And
stumbling onto alien life and phenomenon, seeing the new lighting at play... all that stuff made it better than my previous go at explo. But I'm definitely flagging now, and feeling the grind. 140 jumps to get home...
What perked me up for a while was the risk of trying my first neutron jumps, while not really knowing what I was doing
The passenger destination was 2 ringed earth-likes around a neutron star. It seemed the perfect time...
Here are some vids of my tentative attempts...

The only problem is that I now seem to be out of the neutron star field, and I'm back to just straight-line grind. (Best I can do to break it up is at least chain the odd nebula on the way back, in the hope that there are more lagrange clouds or life in those space-dusty areas. I don't really know if it works like that though
