WT? Attacked by friendlies

So I'm in a PP Control system for my own faction when I get interdicted by an enemy NPC. Shortly after another ship drops in and starts firing at me - awesome, 2 for the price of 1.

After dispatching the first I then turn to the 2nd only to see that it is a Security Forces viper. Wt? Did I shoot him by accident? Did I shoot the enemy first? Nope, no Wanted status.

Supercruise away and get interdicted by another copper who start shooting at me immediately. SC again and get to the destination station which thankfully is a platform but unusually the police are there anyway and again start firing.

Manage to land without too much problem and enter hangar. Not sure what awaits me though when I emerge. The fighting music is still playing and maybe some friends have turned up in the meantime.

No Wanted status, no fines, no contraband, no nothing.

Did you perhaps also get a message about betrayal via your comms? It should still be there if you have not already seen it.
Nevertheless it is a mystery to me what happened.

I killed three ships of Patreus after they opened fire and got wanted themselves. Nevertheless my power (a competing imperial faction) called me a traitor and deducted 20 merits per kill.

I have been pulled out of hyperspace by another power's adepts before and dispatched of them without repercussions, but they did not belong to an imperial faction.

Same thing happened again.

Played it safe by logging out and in again. Left the station and all was fine. Jumped to another system to hand in a mission, jumped back and the exact same scenario as before.

I've logged out again so cant check my messages but will look out for it if it happens again.

Logged in again, go to a Coriolis station this time, no problem. Even get a scan when leaving - all clear. Then interdicted by police who again start shooting. No "traitor" messages.

Only thing I can think off is I have a mission to steal Military Plans from that system (from Federal by Federal mind you). I hadn't actually done it yet though.

I did complete that mission and returned to the system without incident.

Sounds like a bug to me.
Or the AI just doesn't like you.

Did the behavior of the police change after you turned in that mission?
