X-52 Problems

Not sure what you mean by SST, but if you mean the software that allows you to set up your own profiles for the X52, you need to have that installed or some buttons will not work as expected in E: D, e.g, the pinkie button may not behave as expected. I seem to recall one other button has issues without that installed but I forget which.

Well...

It happened again.

You know what I think? I think it's this crappola SST software.

I betcha if I just install the drivers, and leave it at that, it will work fine.

I bought the exact same stick a week ago. All I did was install the drivers (I did it from the cd) and plug it in and it worked fine. The only problem I've had with it was when the lights all turned off and the stopped reacting to the stick... turned out the wire between the stick and the throttle had come unplugged. Quit game, make sure it's all connected right, restart game, select X52 preset in controls, remap a few buttons the way I like and it's all good.

Also I have mine plugged into a powered USB3.0 hub which is plugged into a USB3.0 port. No issues. There's a diagram here on the forums here somewhere showing the default mapping for the X52. It's in some weird open office format, but I got it converted to a PDF file and printed it out - can send you a copy if you want.

Yeah, I thought I had it handled there.

Seems it's all a big catastrophe on my computer right now. The other day, I just got a blue screen for the first time in at least two years - I'm running on two cores, an aging powersupply, a weak GPU, and a single 500 Gig HD filled to the brim with God knows what kind of scum and villainy.

It's amazing this trooper of a computer hasn't died before now, and I shouldn't be surprised that it's not accepting new peripherals to the party!

In two days, I'll burn in my new monster rig and be ready for the update!

You got me going, ianw.

The whole thing.. I think.. was installing drivers first with your device unplugged.. plugging it in, then running the software as admin.

Thanks a lot. You rule!

Thanks - but I just cut and pasted what they told me!

Sorry to hear that - are you running win 7 by any chance?

Nope.. Vista.

Like I said, everything's about to change on Monday. I really appreciate your help. I've done a little research and found a number of folks having the same problem as me... it's not the stick, it's my computer.

Vista and an aging/bloated hard-drive kill lots of things.

Just a thought but do you have it plugged direct or via usb hub ......I had the x52 do silly things if it was in one

I've tried every USB that I have on this thing. I don't have an external USB extension if that's what you mean.

(As much as I've loved PC gaming for so long, I'm still pretty illiterate about things!)

Yes the SST software is the profiling thing. I don't have it, I'm using the X52 as a standard controller. The only bits that don't work is the throttle button intended for boost, the button from pressing the scroll wheel on the back of the throttle (the wheel itself works tho) and the mouse-stick. The pinkie button functions as a normal button rather than a shift button.

I do intend to try installing the SST software and creating a custom profile for ED but between work, a demanding girlfriend, trying to have a social life, and an imminent overseas trip who has the time. It's taken me 20 minutes just to write this message between the various interuptions.

Sometimes I miss being a single unemployed computer nerd. :)

HA! I know the feeling.

I did get it all working for a second, once I got into Elite however, my stick flashed momentarily and my profiles were lost.

I had it working with the whole SST profiler, my mouse stick, wheels etc... they all worked.

I was able to fly - twice - for about 10 seconds... then my stick flashed and my profiles were all lost... I hope it's just Vista and a dinosaur computer. I don't want to send this back! I know how it feels now!

Funnily enough I could never get it working on my Win7 laptop - wouldn't even install properly. Gave up trying - after many wasted hours - when i got my gaming PC.

Vista - 1st time no problem.

My new gaming PC - was win8 now 8.1 - 1st time no problem..

Well, I hope I find it the same way.

I'm wondering if this isn't a power issue.
The X52 draws a reasonable amount of power and the port may be overloading and being shutdown by the USB handling software in the BIOS or OS.
Some old USB ports can only supply 300mA, newer standard is 500mA, some are 1000mA and, just for reference, for things like an iPad you need 2100mA.
I can't think of any motherboards that have anything with more than 1000mA ports on them, they're almost universally 500mA.
If your X52 with all the lights on it etc... is drawing more than 500mA then I think you're going to run into problems. Especially if you have old 300mA ports.

The excessive current draw from a port would give you the same symptoms i.e. working fine for a bit and then disappearing.
If it were a software issue with drivers then I'd expect one or the other, for it to work or not at all from the start.

See if you can get it working via a powered hub.

Driver probs tbh. Similar setup. Windows doesnt seem to load everything from a cold boot. Do the following..
Turn off computer so this is from a cold boot.

Now turn it on and let it load into windows.
Once its loaded, restart.

When you get back into windows all the drivers should be loaded and ok. Dont ask me why, no idea.
