X52, Steam Controller, Hotas?

Currently I play with the mousepad on my Alienware laptop and its proved very responsive! I am used to it.....

But its the New Year and perhaps that should bring change?....

I was thinking about getting the steam controller but wondered if anyone else uses it and has found it effective? If not what is the best alternative available for say under £100?

Thanks in advance for your assistance

Thrustmaster T-Flight HOTAS X http://www.thrustmaster.com/products/tflight-hotas-x

Not expensive, the easiest way to see if you like a HOTAS, and for the money a remarkably good piece of kit.
No special drivers or setup needed, ED recognises it and will default to a standard T-Flight binding configuration (which you can customise).

100% agree, i picked 1 up at Maplins as it wasn't much cheaper online (i paid £37, Amazon had it for £32 i think with delivery) it was just before christmas so didn't want to wait for delivery. i then watched this video Isinona = Epic and looked to see what he uses and it's the same!! absolutely amazing flying and the HOTAS feels nice and responsive, i'm not sure i'll ever be as good as Isinona but here's hoping :)

I've played with the xbox 360 controller, steam controller, and x52 pro. I do love the steam controller I have to say, for the price it's awesome, customization is incredible, touchpads are accurate and fun to use, but I would definitly be lying if I said it was better than a proper HOTAS for Elite Dangerous. If you have the money, and Elite Dangerous is a game you are planning on spending a lot of time with (or if you play a lot of flight sims as well), Then an x52, or x52 pro would be my suggestions because playing with one has added so much to my gameplay experience. ED looks so cool, and playing with a x52 just makes it feel cool, as well as being a vastly superior controller for this type of game in almost every way, my skill level skyrocketed after getting one.

HOWEVER, if you are a little more casual with ED and also spend a lot of time playing other types of games for which a joystick is fairly useless, the steam controller is my #1 pick. Like I said, ED is absolutely playable with a steam controller, even pretty fun, just not quite as good as a x52, that being said, it's 100% impossible to play a game like skyrim with an x52, so it'S up to you.

I think OP's answer is therefore
Buy the Thrustmaster T-Flight HOTAS X. for just shy of £40.
I've just got one and it is great. You have option of keeping as separate throttle and joystick units or , as I have, bolting the two together which I use sitting on my lap.
Has a lot of buttons (12) allowing you to directly control nearly everything without having to resort to keyboard for much at all.
I'm really struggling to fault it atm.
Has a fairly heavy click when you move throttle to central position, which can make smooth low speed control a little bit tricky.
Also movement creaks a bit, but I guess it will smooth out with time. Actual response is smooth, it just feels it could do with a bit of grease.
Edit:-
it is also a fairly big heavy beast. Your handheld controller which slides nicely in the gap on top of your pc/xbox under the monitor stand it is not :)

good stuff, i am tempted by the thrustmaster but I do play mostly in my lounge with the laptop between my legs.. I think the larger Hotas system wouldnt work like that as I would need to be at a table/desk although Generaldea was suggesting actually can use them on you lap?.

with that in mind il probably get both the thrustmaster (to test the hotas style system before i invest in something better) and the steam controller as I play other games both sim and otherwise as well but ive got got about 1000 hrs sunk into ED already so im sure i cant be counted as casual :)
