X52 switch bounce

Bit of proper contact cleaner, failing that, add some capacitors 
Cor, tricky one. You'd be talking about some sort of intermediate software to debounce. Unless there's a way to adjust sensitivity within your controller (or windows) software it could get heavy duty (+ lag?) ; http://www.embedded.com/electronics-blogs/break-points/4024981/My-favorite-software-debouncers
If it settles down after a period of time it might be a temperature related thing (expansion with your warm hands is closing the contacts more solidly?). Suppose you could try warming the joystick before you sit down (??) but really it sounds like you're talking about faulty switches? Shouldn't happen really should it. Maybe time for a strongly worded letter?

Following Asp's post .. another try could be a can of compressed air (computer cleaner) .. maybe is, dust inside?

You could maybe add a short delay in the software I suppose - but I've never tried that.

Very basically - you press a switch - and instead of one "switch" action it does dozens of them, so by physically pressing it it's left you in an "unpressed" state

It's a mechanical vibration inside the switch. So when you try to close the contacts, they oscillate against each other and the electrical signal sent .. is on-off-on-off.

You press a switch once, but it activates twice, so when you retract your landing gear, it goes back down again. When you try and target someone from the panel. it detargets them too.
I've got a feeling that its an ED thing rather than a hardware problem.

Thanks mate. I can confirm then that i have an X52 and i have the same issue, i have it with only 1 button, and its only in this game, but it never settles down.
For me its my D button on the throttle, its my reverse thrust button and it drives me fk*n nuts!!
Thought it was just me.
Pull the button out gently, there's a little black triangle surround that clicks off - be careful not to lose the jellybean button!
Behind it is a glaring bright LED, so you might want to turn the brightness down, and to the left a bit offset is the actual button switch itself. Give it a good scoosh of contact cleaner, reassemble, and give it a try takes all of 20 seconds.

ED maybe unusually sensitive to inputs but if it settles down for you after a while, or if most people don't have landing gear with a life of it's own, ED is reacting to an unusually messy input too. 50/50 (at most) really if it doesn't happen all the time for everyone.
Joystick clean/maintenance should probably be on the "things-to-do every now and then" list in any case?

Well, I just RMA'd Number 7, so they are very poor quality, sadly for me it is the best stick for Elite, so I will keep sending them back to Amazon as long as I will play ED, at least I can add something to my signature
I use a X52 and mine needs its button contacts cleaned from time to time. I had the same problem as you. Window cleaner does the trick. But I disassembled it, which takes some time and care.
I have an X52 Pro and I have the same issue with my D button only! Weird!
My D button is also used for reverse, but also mapped to Jump in combination with the pinky switch on the stick. Sometimes I go to jump and nothing happens because the one physical press resulted in multiple presses at the driver end. I just press the button slightly harder than I normally would and this seems to make it work 99% of the time.
Window cleaner has ammonia in it - and you really don't want that on a PCB Not to mention what it does to rubberized plastic

I own a Thargoid Edition, so it works pretty well with Ammonia. Jokes aside, I clean contacts like these with window cleaner since 25 years, never had an issue. But to feel safer one can use spiritus or alcohol. Anything that makes smeary, fatty stuff go away.
You can make a dust cover?
Covers sewn from cotton cloth (or cotton-containing cloth, try not to use synthetics) make the best equipment covers. Plastic isn't good, doesn't allow for the atmosphere inside the bag to breathe, can trap humidity and lead to faster corrosion of switch contacts. Can also cause static.
