X52 throttle hat switch diagonal woes

Im trying to use the throttle index finger hat swith in the X52 (vanilla) for strafing and I have mapped up/down and left/right at the control opitons in game.... but for some reason the diagonal points in the hat are not recognized and no strafe at all occurs.

If i open the windows/control pannel device properties window the game works as i intended but if i close it the diagonal points stop strafing... any ideas?

The hats are 8-way switches by default. If you strafe diagonally, the switch doesn't fire up and right (2 commands), it fires right-up (1 command) - which E-D doesn't recognize.

Try creating a profile for Elite Dangerous in the Saitek Software and change the hat behaviour to 4-way.

On the Saitek X52 the two hat switches on the joystick are eight way, but the index finger hat switch on the throttle is only FOUR way. Hence, no diagonals.

No, it's configurable. It's only 4-way by default.

Create a profile in the Saitek profile editor. Go to "POV Hat 3".

Right-click it. You'll probably see it's got a tick on "4-Way". Select 8-way instead.

Save the profile.

Select that as the default profile.

Cool I didn't know that. Thanks. I haven't tried making a profile yet as the default X52 mapping does pretty much everything I want.

Nice thanks.

I tried 8 way before but then I could never get the pinky switch to work properly for screens. The TrackIR override didn't help either.

I tried moving thrusters to the nub mouse but then everything else just didn't work right. I can tell I'm going to just have to put more time into this - but the main problem is that the control interface is just awful, and I can't bring myself to do it. :(

Thanks for the tips guys, will do the profile after my return from holidays.

Will I need to have the profile software up and running every time I play or once stored under "default profile" the hotas just picks it up automatically without the software?

I ditched the SST software years ago foregoing the multiple mode functionality in favour of sanity but from memory I think it has to be running with the profile loaded up to work.

I have been using the profiler for a while. Had some problems with my X52 and thought it was the profiler. (random calibration offset mid game etc) A powered USB hub ($10) fixed that and everything has been perfect ever since.

I don't use the pinkie for looking at the UI though. Head tracking combined with the hats on the stick make the game more immersive and intuitive at the same time.

I do use the pinkie as a shift button to switch between a few secondary things when situation arises.
