X56 Weird Behaviour

I have recently returned and am using the Logitech X56 system which is what I used to use previously.

What is happening is the fire buttons on the stick seem to stop working for no reason but the axis still functions.

The only way to remedy it is to unplug and back in again and it works fine fore a while and then does it again.

I have used different USB ports and also a mains powered hub but it is still happening but the throttle seems to be OK.

Has anyone experienced this and how did you resolve it?

Thanks

Yes I have tried everything including re-calibrating.

I don't understand why the X and Y axis on the stick still function but the buttons don't register.

try the link i above , too see if the buttons are registering, it could be any number of reasons, dust under trigger, lose connection, faulty new drivers. lose connected USB port. Dirty pad under trigger (if it has one).faulty joystick software.

if that doesn't help try

1) Test functionality with the Rhino app.
2) Check power to the stick. Both stick and throttle needs powered USB ports, so make sure they are either plugged directly into your computer or they are in a (good) powered USB hub.

If power is the problem, try turning the background lighting off. Seems a waste of power anyway, even if us PC types like our boxes to look like fireworks.

I think it is a hardware issue as there seems to be multiple threads on the internet about this specific problem.

The X and Y axis still functions OK whereas the buttons just stop.....

Maybe time to switch to VKB.

Shame really as my HOTAS only has around 30 hours of use......

If it is new you can get it replaced, at least if it is still under warranty.

The problem I tend to run into with the X-series of sticks is the spring for the vertical axis of the stick breaking. So I'm getting used to fly without yaw.

My throttle only works properly when plugged into the USB2 port of the machine. It has all sorts of issues (ghost presses, buttons not working) in any of the USB 3 ports. The stick doesn't seem to mind where it goes.

I had weird things happening too with my x56 when it was connected to a motherboard USB 3.2 port but since connecting to powered pcie USB 3.1 card have had no problems.

After buying my X56 a couple of years back I had weird things happening as well, tried everything I read online about it from powered USB's to USB3.0 and a whole load more. Then a Cmdr on these forums posted the solution. It must plugged into a USB 2.0 on your PC, from there it can go to a powered USB 3.0 hub as mine does or anywhere else but the plug from the powered hub must be plugged into a USB 2.0 port on the PC whether everything else is USB 3.0. I set it up like that, then recalibrated in Windows Devices and printers and have never had a single problem in the year and a half since. Prior to that I was thinking of getting rid of it. There is a thread on these forums with a better explanation of how this is if you do a search. Fact is he is absolutely correct.

The issue is probably power. These days if your PSU isn't rounding the 750w mark, you're in danger of browning out, which can cause weird glitches to crashes for no apparent reason.

You need to have the joystick and the throttle on separate USB controllers. Doesn't matter if its USB 2.0, 3.0, 3.1, or 3.2. The X56 basically uses up all the power of the USB controller. You could see if turning off the LED lights might get you over the line, but generally you'll want nothing but the Joystick and Throttle alone, each on separate USB controllers. A powered hub would help, but I have gone through dozens of them and I haven't found a reliable one yet, the more you use them the quicker they die. The cleanest power you're going to get will come from the motherboard, so the back ports are your best bet.

Now that being said the throttle buttons on the X56 are for lack of a better word "crap". The slider button is basically useless, the 2 back buttons for index and middle fingers work when ever they want to, the contact behind them is very weak and sweat from your fingers seems to work its way in and starts mess with the contact.

The two spinning wheels on the throttle after about a month have so much movement, you cannot tell where the central notch is at all. I don't use them anymore either. The flick switches have all remained functional and they are my fav of all the buttons, old school is the best. The Joystick works with no problems, but forget about trying to center it without a hefty deadzone.

I was a bit flush when I splashed out for the X56, but after 6 months I wish I had gone with the Warthog setup.

As I said in my previous post in this thread there was a Cmdr Milesread who posted the solution and the why's and wherefores to the power problem so here is a copy of that post from May 2022.

Copied from Cmdr MilesRead's May '22 solution to the X56 ghosting and other control issues.
I know.
that's why if you use an external usb 3 powered hub, you plug it into the usb 2 port on your pc.
the usb 3 hub simply provides enough power, there are no usb 3 drivers or other things here.
for some of the flight sticks, the drivers are only for usb 2. but for many, the power that usb 3 can provide is needed to work.
so the cheaper solution is the 2male into 1female usb splitter.
there are 2 kinds, 1 splits the entire usb(no good for this), the other, the one to use has data+power on 1 plug and power only on the 2nd plug. allowing you to draw the power from 2 ports.
the thing is that it only takes a millisecond of the power on the port to fluctuate for windows to then see there is no device there suddenly.
and for ED that often means sudden change to keybinds too because the controller is no longer visible.
I use the 4 port powered usb 3 hub. I have a few on this pc, but the one for my Saitek works fine on the usb3 hub that then plugs into usb2 on my pc
I also happen to be an electronics tech and pc tech and beside the usual multi-meters, I have several usb meters. they are cheap and worth having.
After buying my first Saitek back in 2014, I had the same issue. when I figured out why, I sent them an email suggesting they put such a splitter into each package, or at least a note suggesting a person get one or a powered hub.
The email was technical proof, proving to them what was the cause and suggestions to fix it.
They ofc....ignored.
the jist was and still is that the flight sticks and their L.E.D.'s often use more than the 500ma that a usb 2 port can provide.
some pc's can deal with it just fine, others cannot.

If it is an older "MadKatz" unit (blue paint) it may be falling apart inside. When MadKatz bought Saitek they gutted quality control and sold a BUNCH of poorly made product before selling the Saitek brand to Logitech. On many of the MadKatz units, tiny wires inside the unit tend to break.
If it is a newer Logitech (grey paint) unit, call Logitech about warranty.

Maybe it's time to move on. I've had the X-55, X-56 blue and gray and all of the joysticks eventually wore out. None of them would ever center properly as in 40 percent for full left yaw movement and 60 percent for the right. The VKB Gladiator NXT Evo with the X-56 grey throttle, a TT Esports Black Element mouse and a Samson G Track Pro mic makes for an awesome setup. All the lights are also 'Thargoid' green. :)
