Newcomer / Intro xbox 360 controller support?

I did a forum search for 360 got nothing I'm sure this has been discussed a billion times but the search hath failth, and my google's always insisted on giving me everything that's five months old so I know five months ago this game didn't have native 360 controller support but I got the buy now button ready to be clicked I just need confirmation of native 360 controller support either here now or on its way and maybe how it compares to star citizen's if you feel like telling me since I already have that and could save money if this one's controller controls either are super bad or non-existent

I don't have 360, so I dont know if it is native or not, but I know lots of people use it without problems

Go on, press buy it now

Is the X-Box Controller even DirectInput compatible?
Usually console controllers don't work on the PC because they use proprietory, undisclosed technology.

In modern times, games don't have to support a specific controller, they just support DirectInput (on Windows), then you can use whatever you like.

BTW, i use a Logitech Dual Action - it's best to fly with a gamepad than a flightstick in E:D.

Thanks I also managed to find a video that confirms it not only has support but shows the buttons on screen that's what I was hoping for I am clicking buy right now!1!!!!1!1!

The default in-game presets for the official microsoft xbox 360-pad are ‘control pad’ and ‘control pad with yaw’. I prefer the yaw. A 360-pad or similar device accompanied with EDTracker and VoiceAttack is a joy to behold. The top link below will help you setup, backup and rename controller presets. Take care and Elite!

I use a wireless PS3 Controller posing as an XBOX 360 Controller on my PC, and it works fine on ED. With button combinations you can really map many of the important functions to it, too.

Thanks a bunch everyone I have to postpone my takeoff 3-5 business days because frontier doesn't like visa so I had to transfer the money to paypal

herherhreherheheherh 2015 we made it! technological advancements! it's 7:39 AM and I'm already bored woop woop I hope I remember that I did this and wanted this game by then (paypal also is saying my bank isn't confirmed then I click that and it doesn't say what one it's talking about so let's hope I even confirmed oh man I just I want to get rid of my comptuer so bad and internet)

With that attitude, if you think you're gonna have fun playing Elite Dangerous, you're gonna have a baaaad time.

I know being a happy-go-lucky stoner might make it seem like this ain't my kind of game but believe me just because I'm giggles and flowers doesn't mean arma 3 can't be my favorite game and I can't be hardcore pro gamer at super space games I mean sure I'm not gonna pay much attention but I'm gonna be an really good pilot and really good at the first person shooting, everything else you're right I will have a baaaaad time lmao I hope there's not too much reading

Yeah, absolutely no problems with the 360 controller. Just reassign the controls a little (I put yaw on the right stick x-axis) and forward/back/left/right thrusters on the d-pad with up/down thrust using the y-axis on the right stick. Works a charm.

Xbox One controllers also work just as well. That's what I'm using.

I really need to buy a 360 wireless dongle for the PC some day.

yes the 360 controller works and they have a config for those controls in the setting. however, you will be very limited with the 360 controller. you will still need the m/kb. the ability to Yaw is not available.
voice attack with a 360 controller would allow for you to use voice commands with the controller. its not that the 360 controller doesnt work, because it does....its just limited by the lack of button options. this game uses a ton of button controls.

i recommend a hotas - for $50 Thrustmaster T-Flight Hotas X Flight Stick is the greatest value. it makes the immersion incredible. you will still use the kb, but if you use voice attack with a hotas you will have an incredible immersion experience.

While it's true that you can't map "every" function to the 360 controller it's not true that it doesn't have the ability to Yaw.

You can remap any function to any button on the 360 as you wish. I have Yaw mapped to the X-axis on the right stick.

This is with an xbox one controller, but a 360 controller is identical.

You can set up modifier keys and get dozens of functions onto the controller. You may notice that I have all 6 axis mapping on this thing - its just that 2/6 are digital.

Yep... you're gonna have SO MUCH of a bad time :D

Okay I got the game yesterday and before I look at all this recommended stuff would it be possible to use more than one controller? I wouldn't mind the joysticks not being able to have different functions if it couldn't recognize that but I would simply love it to be able to set the other buttons to warp speed and landing gear and 100% and 75% speed

basically I'd use it like one of those mini qwert gaming pads, but I'd get an xbox one controller this way I can see if it's got better joysticks if so I'll use it as the main flying controller if not I'll stick with the 360

OR, have a third controller specifically for landing, then one day one for fps combat, ground driving, etc

and being able to use a ps4 controller with all its extra bells and whistles and having its programmed keys show up properly alongside the 360's buttons, 100% possible super easy but yeah probably not gonna happen

it would just be easier for me to have ten controllers lol

no joysticks I tend to stand while playing and I'm not just standing I'm exercising, and if I'm not doing that I'm on a recliner lol, can't do joysticks (maybe on the recliner but I just prefer controllers)

I use an X-Box controller almost exclusively. I still need a few keys mapped to the keyboard (specifically FSD, chat, firegroups, and FA on/off). Other then that, everything else is done on my controller.

My co-worker uses a HOTAS for normal flight and an X-Box controller for landing. So, it's definitely possible but I don't know how he has it configured.

That gives me hope at least!

Fail for Google.
I've been playing Elite Dangerous since last June (Beta) using a 360 controller, and I didn't have to do anything aggravating, just plugged it in.

I'm using a wireless Xbox 360 Controller in "Advanced Control Pad" mode, and heartily recommend it. It takes a little while to get used to, but it's really handy to have almost everything mapped to some sort of controller key combination. I hardly need the keyboard at all now. (Notable omissions from Advanced are the kill throttle and flight assist toggle; currently I largely get along without the latter, and mapped the former to the Back button since I don't have a use for silent running right now.)
