Xbox controller setup for X-56 Hotas user - suggestions sought

I'm a long-time hotas user, and I have an X-56 Rhino for playing Elite: Dangerous.

I'm away a bit this summer and thought I'd take the game on my ultrabook, but carrying a hotas is just never going to happen.

I do have a USB Xbox 360 PC controller though. Does anybody have suggestions how I can set this up effectively to use with the game?

Thanks all :)

I cannot give you a scheme, but i was in a similar position. Essential was to make heavy and systematic use of Meta Buttons. I used the four buttons (A, B, X, Y, A+X, B+Y) as meta keys in combination with the D pad. All in a systematic fashion, e.g pressing X + Dpad gives access to landing gear, cargo scoop, hard points, and lights. Pressing B+Dpad maps targeting, etc...

With this you can map 6*4=24 actions on the Dpad, of course you can also map combinations with the two stick buttons and LB/RB, which gives you another 24 actions.

Just don't forget to write it down somewhere, once you mapped all buttons and combinations.

Edit: Also there is an option somewhere under controls->miscellaneous where you can activate a preview for you meta keys. I.e. if you press just the meta keys, e.g. X in the example above, it will show you and semi transparent overlay with the mapping of the Dpad for that meta key. It works really great.

I have a custom control scheme for xbox controllers, i can list a few of the basic things i have bound atm but cant go through them all.

RT: Accelerate
LT: Decelerate
RB: Primary fire
LB: Secondary fire
A: Switch fire groups
B: Boost
Y: Target
X: deploy hardpoints
Left stick (up and down): Pitch
Left stick (left and right): Roll
Right stick (up and down): Vertical thrust
Right stick (left and right): Lateral thrust
Dpad: Pip management

Edit: or do what Un1k0rn says if you dont want to go through the hassle of doing each Binding

Just use the preset for the gamepad. You'll get the same controls as Xbox, which works really well.

Make tweaks as you see fit. Don't forget to use button combos to increase the controls available on the gamepad. For example, "B+LB" for chaff, such as I use on console.

standard 360 controls should suffice. though I would recommend getting Voice attack and mic. voice control is a must in my opinion.

I'm having somewhat of the same problem situation. I've been playing Elite for a little over a year on X1 and now just bought it for PC. I will be doing the HOTAS thing later, but I'm trying to set up my xbox controller to work the same way. Is it possible to had the headlook open the screens like on console or will I have to use the keyboard to open screens and highlight items? I seem to be running out of button maps. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. o7

The advanced control pad preset setting is pretty decent, except I prefer to rebind the roll and yaw axis so that pitch and yaw are on same stick (this gives you look up/down and side to side on same stick instead of look up/down and the equivalent of a first person shooter character doing a cartwheel).

Another recommendation for the default layout, it really is as good as you're going to get on a gamepad apart from a couple tweaks to make it suit you perfectly.

The default M&K controls don't seem too bad really either, perhaps just take a mouse?
