Xbox elite controller bindings and issue

Hi,
I have messed up and was playing the recent CG on Keyboard and Mouse, when I went back to the controller I lost my bindings for the Xbox controller.

The main issue is that I cannot work out how to interact with the three control panels with the controller when I move the right stick to face them. Something has changed and the You Tube videos don't help, I am not able to find anything to bind the bumpers to toggle forwards and back.

Hey. Try holding down your x or y button, that gives you another range of commands. Once you've held it for a few seconds the key bindings for that command range will be shown up on your screen - for example the default for me was that if I hold down the "x" than press the left or right front button it cycles firegroups. There's also access to internal panel - your ship modules, firegroup set up page etc, and external panel - navigation, transactions, contacts.

Do you mean you can't find where in the options these binds are?

Options > Controls > Ship Controls > Mode Switches > Looking at external panel > Focuses panel

And the same for the other three. As for the throttle:

Options > Controls > Ship Controls > Flight Throttle > Increase Throttle / Decrease Throttle

The game has the bad habit of losing your bindings in the default keyboard&mouse preset if you launch the game without the controller connected (even after 10 years they still haven't fixed this...) However, a custom preset ought to be preserved. And even if it switches to the m&kb preset because of launching the game without the controller connected, you can then switch to the xbox preset from the options menu. You can also create a backup of the preset file for future use.

Yes once I press down RS and go in to headlook, I don't know how to make the controller options to go forward and back through the panels when looking at them using RB and LB.
Shame any defaults don't include this.

I myself have disabled the "open on look" behavior of the panels because it's more annoying than useful (it obstructs the view when I'm trying to look around).

Instead, just go to whichever panel by pressing X + a d-pad direction. You can then navigate the panel as normal. Then you can press B or the same X+direction to return to looking towards the front.

I have played like this for years so don't really want to change.
On a You Tube video (Maple Nachiman) there is Interface Mode which has UI panel Up,down,left and right and also UI panel select and back this does seem to exist anymore in the game.
I am looking for UI panel select and UI back to go through the menus on my controller.

Have sent in a ticket as I can't see how to fix this, something has changed in the settings or one of the defaults had this from the go to navigate the panels using a controller.

You get used to X+dpad pretty quickly. Just try it. In fact, it's actually faster and more efficient than using free look.

ED resets the "custom.binds" if a controller is not connected when ED starts.
Back up the config and make "your" profile, this will prevent the reset and you can change it back.
This way you can also created several profiles and change via "Options > Controls" any time.

How do I stop elite dangerous from wiping all of my keybindings?

Sometimes Elite wipes my bidings. How do I stop that? It's a pain in the ass to reassign all of the bidings again.

Now working.
The interface mode to use the panels with your controller is now on the general controls tab and not ship controls, just set to control pad alternate 3.
