Xbox Elite Controller - why I'm really looking forward to it

In case you haven't heard, Microsoft have a new controller inbound, the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller (afaik nothing to do with Elite: Dangerous :p)

The main reason I am excited is the extra paddles on the back. I was JUST thinking that the Xbox controller should have these literally today. Sometimes your prayers are answered instantly :D

I have a flightstick+hotas and they are great. Took a while to get used to but overall, it's much better flying with such a setup. For immersion, for control, because it's natural, because it's easier.

But flightsticks are big and clunky. My desk-space is limited so I have to set them up each time I play and put them away after. When they are there, I have no room for the keyboard so that's annoying. They can hurt my wrist as it's hard to get the right alignment and elbow-grounding necessary. I have to sit upright, in a specific position the entire play time. So for these reasons, I don't always use the flightstick, and often prefer the comfort and portability of a controller. Plus I'm probably still more used to piloting with a controller (shame on me).

So yeah, now a controller is coming out with ENOUGH controls to properly fly. What was the main thing missing? Controls for lateral thrusters! No matter how you arrange it, it is simply not possible to have yaw, pitch, roll and all 3 lateral thruster dimensions assigned in such a way that you can do them all at the same time, and certainly no way to do that and still have spare "fingers" for shooting, power management, targeting etc.

So with the Elite Controller, that's going to be a piece of cake. I'll finally be able to play FA-off with a controller as well, finally be able to have full maneuvers at the ready for combat.

Only down side is that it's going to be $150, the price of a good flightstick/hotas :(

Well, have till October to save up :D

Also, whenever pc gets the ui updates, using a controller might be easier. Though, I haven't played the xbox version.

It's about time. I remembe rbuying a controller specifically becaus eit had buttons in the location of those paddles many years ago for the Xbox. The original Xbox.

Why has it taken so damn long for them to figure this out? I've actually modded a controller to move buttons down there for the Xbox 360...

Though, at that price, I'm glad I have the PC version, and a HOTAS.

Z...

Please the gods, lets not cripple the PC with console UI elements. That's a hallmark of weak coding skills and lazy design. If I wanted a console UI, I'd get a console. Blech.

I currently play with a standard XBOX 360 controller (on PC) and I hardly ever need the keyboard. That said, if I was fully loaded with chaff, heat sinks ans SCBs I might be wishing for a few extra buttons.

Does the Xbox Elite Controller have hall effect or similar sensors or just regular pots (which will wear out)?
For the price of this controller we can get some pretty decent sticks.

I would imagine it would only appear when called. They should make it to where it does not interfere with or modify the way people do things currently. One can hope.

I would love to toy around with that. But 150$ is a tad bit much with the failing Euro. Alas, my 360 controller has enough buttons for Dark Souls, so no need to empty my pockets.

That's a lot of cash for 4 extra buttons. It doesn't even come standard with a rechargeable battery.

I'm going to give the steam controller a go instead.

Not played a game with a controller for a good few months now... and I couldn't help but want one.. looks niice.
Alas, out of my price range

There are soo many gamepads out there. Don't know why someone should bother getting a console one.

I fly with a Logitech Dual Action.

Menus, sub menus and then some more submenus, and very little in the way of keyboard shortcuts.
ED has had a console UI all along.

If I'd buy this presumably great but costy piece of plastic it'd mainly for ED. So far I'm happy with the controls but a few extra buttons for FAoff and chaffs and stuff would be welcome

So why are you looking forward to the X-Box controller in particular, when there are so many gamepads available on the market?

Well, for me it's because Microsoft have had a well-deserved reputation since they started making Sidewinders many moons ago. The general consensus is that these are better than the XBox360 controllers, which were already pretty good. And yes, XBOne gamepads use Hall-effect sensors.

I was going to buy one but it looks like I'm now going to have to wait. It would be silly me paying money for it when I'm getting one free in a packet of Oculus Rift.

Playstation 4 controller works very good, I use it after I did break a left hand setup T16000M, 3 times within 6 months
