xbox elite controller

Does anyone here use the XBox Elite controller in this game? How do you use the paddles - i.e. what do you bind them to?

I am probably going to pull the trigger (sorry) on buying one of these for use with other games but wondered how people felt about them in Elite. I did have a peek at EDRefCard but there was not much info and the four published ones didn't mention the paddles.

Careful - at least for other PC games, the paddles only give you alternative inputs, not additional inputs (I haven't bound my elite controller to ED, though).
I.e., in my controller setup, I have the paddles set to A/B/X/Y.

I use the Elite Contoller but on Xbox. Yes you can only put other buttons on the paddles but I find it great and can't imagine playing Elite without Elite (pun intended).

My upper paddles (UL/UR) are mapped to LB/RB and are for acceleration/deceleration. Pressed at the same time toggles flight assist.
  • Y+UL to set fsd to 75%
  • Y+UR to enter fss
  • A+UL/UR to scale sensor range

My lower left paddle (LL) is mapped to X and deploys hardpoints.
  • LL+UL/UR to select fire groups
  • LL+D-pad for activating the ship panels

My lower right paddle (LR) is mapped to B and toggles orbit lines
  • LR+LL for heatsink
  • LR+UR for boost
  • LR+UL for silent running
  • LR+A for selecting nearest hostile target
  • LR+Y for selecting next system on plotted route
  • LR+right stick click for toggle night vision
  • LR+left stick click for chaff
  • LR+D-pad for cargo scoop, landing gear, camera suit and ship lights
  • UR+LR+D-pad for fighter orders

You see I've gone a bit crazy with button combinations and those are only the ones involving the paddles.

If you are playing the game a lot I can totally recommend getting the elite controller. It gives you the possibility to map a lot of things that are easily accessible. But it takes a bit of muscle memory so I think it's not for the casual player...

I had expensive kit pro flight yolk peddels ect
personally I found I had more precise FA off control ect with just a basic x box pad and voice attack (I kept track IR of course)
with all my flight games so got rid of them...……….
stil when it comes to first person shoot itsa mouse to aim though I can use a pad but a mouse wins!
I imagine your new ELITE x box pad will serve you well...…………...
however you decide to bind it.

I had not realised that the paddles were not additional controls so I'm not going to waste the £80-£90 extra that it costs over the normal wireless one.

I use HOTAS (CHPro kit) for Elite (and flight sims) on my PC and I use a normal XBox wireless controller for other games, the additional one I am looking to buy is for use mainly with my gaming laptop (as I am fed up re-syncing / linking / whatever it is called) my existing one when going from PC to laptop use. (I blame Hello Games for this as they have made NMS so much more engaging lately.)

So thanks for the replies anyway. (y)

I truly recommend REWASD. The Xbox One pad or Elite Controller in conjunction with the official Xbox One Chatpad, VoiceAttack and REWASD is a joy to behold. The Chatpad will give you a full functioning keyboard at your fingertips. No additional software is required for the Chatpad, Windows recognises the Chatpad as a keyboard, you just need to download the free Xbox Accessories app from the Windows store to update firmware on both the Chatpad and Xbox Controller. REWASD will allow you reconfigure the Elite Controller peddles, buttons and more.

The amount of features and options available are amazing, you can keep it simple or go crazy. I love the fact you can have a simple single button press, double tap, combo or hold etc plus the ability to use the Xbox guide button. The fact you can an reassign the peddles should you have the Elite controller is another unique feature worth the payment alone. The developers also actively update the software. I'd recommend playtesting the free trial and the total package is worth it and some.

I was very disappointed when I discovered I couldn't even use them as extra buttons when connected to my PC. Since then, the paddles have simply stayed in the case - I have literally no use for them. :)

I'm using an Elite controller on my XB
I basically use the default scheme with the following modifications which imply unbinding LS and LR clicks

Paddle UP-Left = LB = Throttle Down
Paddle UP-Right = RB = Throttle Up
Paddle Dn-Left = LS-click = Thruster left
Paddle Dn-Right = RS-click = Thruster right

Both left paddles = Speed 0%
Both right paddles = Speed 75%
Both top paddles = speed 50%
Both botton paddles = speed -100% (max reverse)

Paddle Dn-Left + D-pad Left = LS-click + D-dpad Left = Heat Sink
Paddle Dn-Left + D-pad Up = LS-click + D-dpad Up = Chaff
Paddle Dn-Left + D-pad Right = LS-click + D-dpad Right = SCB

Paddle Dn-Righ + D-pad Down = RS-click + D-dpad Down = Headlook
Paddle Dn-Righ + D-pad Left = RS-click + D-dpad Left = SLF Recall
Paddle Dn-Righ + D-pad Up = RS-click + D-dpad Up = SLF Follow
Paddle Dn-Righ + D-pad Right = RS-click + D-dpad Right = SLF Attack

I disagree, paddles are really nice to make some combinations that are not that easy to make using the normal buttons.

The chat pad is a very nice thing in this game for console players. I also use one on the elite 1 controller.

A shame there is no official chat pad for the elite 2 controller.

I am pleased to hear that someone finds them useful, as no-one else I have ever discussed it with uses them. They'd still be more useful as extra buttons, though...

Even if not using them for extra combinations, binding them to LB/RB ans to stick clicks at least allows me to have lateral thrusters bound (they're completely missing from the default binding scheme) and to be able to adjust throttle while my index fingers are busy firing

Sure, it would have been nice to have extra buttons, but the Elite controller is really nice as it is.

Having profiles for the analog sticks also helps too

It would be nice if the controls would make a difference between the order in which the buttons are pressed. You can't have for example one thing mapped to LB+RB and another mapped to RB+LB.

I also wanted to have lateral thrusters in my standard flight controls for a while (at the moment in alternative flight controls). But I already used up all combinations that would make sence and I won't get used to a new layout after building up muscle memory for so long

@Para Handy Yes, I do and always have on pc, but I'd swop to your HOTAS for EDO if I could. Aside from needing a keyboard for chat, I have all my EDO controls bound to it. Its paddles are set the same as @Northpin and the whole thing eases my health issues. The only thing I cannot set is a double-tap, but combos become a breeze. EDO updated the UI with combo-pausing prompts which significantly helps with recall for those rarer controller tasks.

Better still, i'm told that the xbox release channel is trialling a new feature to have the MkII's buttons, paddles and even the XBLogo key remapped to whatever you like; including qwerty keypress combos; that I hope will role out to pc soon enough. So perhaps consider the MkII version of it if you do ever press the 'trigger' ;) for your portable gaming.
