Xbox Live now supports full cross-platform play - time to look at bringing the separate Xbox and PC/Mac communities together?

Well said Tinman, well said.

Indeed, FD wanted to allow cross platform between PC and console, but MS is the arbiter of that and they've been against that for years due to the simple fact that console players get bent over by PC players in any direct competition style game, MS tested that themselves many years ago, they were not happy with the results, so they don't like to allow it. Sony on the other hand has never given a damn and allows it, but Sony really doesn't give a damn about their players, so that's rather a given.

Now that MS had stated they want to go ahead and allow cross platform with the XBOne, I'm sure FD will get it up and running once they can get the console and PC games to the same version.

Me, I'm worried about allowing PS4 to game with other systems, Sony's network is horrible for security, I don't want it interfacing with any of my systems, it's the sole reason I don't have a PS4.

This is the UWP (Universal windows platform) and requires.... more than a little work to make a reality.

You don't just "enable" it.

I am fairly certain that LARGE chunks of the game would have to be re-worked.

In the Recent Lave radio interview, braben stated that the PC and Xbox are synced up now (with ED1) and when horizons drops they would be synced up as well for ED2.

This idea would be wonderful, but it must be implimented with two open modes, one that is everyone and one that is just PC or Xbox, so those Xbox players that feel intimidated by a HOTAS have some place to go.

When i Log in on my Xbox i want to see:

Open
Solo
Xbox Only
Group

My dream. Also i dream of a fully customizable controller. I have weird dreams.

People think the HOTAS gives a massive advantage, I actually prefer the controller...

Can we get a comment on this from Frontier at all?

Controller differences shouldn't be used as an excuse not to do it, so long as Xbox players can still *choose* to only to play with other Xbox players (which is an MS stipulation anyway, IIRC).

My only comment would be that traditionally console users haven't faired well against PC players due to the input methods used. (KB/Mouse >>> xbox controller for FPS games). However, as ED isn't a twitch based game and you can use an XBox controller on the PC then in theory it should be evenly matched. (Although a slight edge to PC users as they typically have more buttons / KB to augment their contols)

That aside, the more the merrier IMO ...

I play on xbox one, my grandfather play s on pc he has a hotas and xbox controller, playing on his pc we both use the xbox pad and I play a few rounds of cqc and won all of them so I think it may not be that big a deal. Though cqc is quite a bit different than a big ship battle in open.

It's a great point that the PC version already supports three control styles, so if there's any truth to HOTAS having the advantage - well, that imbalance already exists, can't really use that as a reason for why we shouldn't combine xbox/pc players anymore.

Because some here believe humans playing on an xbox are inferior to humans playing on a pc, and should be cleansed from our paradise.

I hope the opposite, but I suspect it means ED will require win10. That be bad...

Well those people should be reminded that PC players don't have their own forum sub-section, and that Dangerous Discussions is for everybody ;)

Xbox here. I'd love to play with/against PC and Mac players. The more the merrier.

One issue which people have used as an argument against is HOTAS support. Well, it's up to Microsoft to support HOTAS on Xbox, isn't it? Job done.

No objection in principle, a skilled xbox player with their controller preference will hold their own against a skilled PC player with theirs. Historically in FPSs there has been an initial disparity because a PC/Mac player simply has more hotkeys to use and more "virtual" control options (ie voice attack etc) than the xbox player does, but it does even out over time. Me, I'm sticking with my PC because it can run better graphics than any xbox and because I absolutely, monumentally SUCK at any game where you have to use a gamepad controller - it's the reason I don't own any consoles.

Integrate 'em by all means but if that means I need to put that win10 spud on my primary machine in order to run ED, and/or sign up for Xbucks Live then I'm out. That would be a deal-breaker for me with any game - even one I love as much as I do ED.

No need for Windows 10.

MS' initial cross-platform support was for players on Xbox One and Windows 10 playing together via Xbox Live (two related platforms, one network)... but for Fable Legends, which is now dead.

What MS is now happy and eager to support is full cross-network support, where people on Xbox One with Xbox Live can play with people on PC (not just Windows 10) with Steam (or other networks) or even with people on other consoles (i.e PS4).

The first cross-network game for Xbox One will be Rocket League, which will start with support for people on Xbox One (Xbox Live) and PC (Steam) playing together (it already allows PC vs PS4), and potentially even allow people on Xbox One and PS4 to play together (the devs already have a solution for that, so it's probably up to Sony and MS...).

Folks always assume that everyone on whatever platform will want to be shooting and blowing up everything. I'd look to crossplay for a bit more than than pew pew.

A larger online community would be one reason, proper community goals where the ED community is involved rather than just a single platforms community. The ability to be part of a larger, longer established wing based player group or Faction too

I suspect that there are a few that would simply blow stuff up of course... :)

As for HOTAS support. The PS4 already has native support through a deal with Thrustmaster and the T-Flight. Can't see why Micro$oft couldn't do this apart from sheer shortsightedness.

As for the modding community on Xbox, I remain hopeful since Bethesda announced mods would be allowed on the Xbox one before the release of Fallout 4, none have filtered through yet, but I live in hope.

And while we're at it... Micro$oft? I want ARMA 3 and Rise of Flight on the Xbox :)

I asked Gary Richards about this in the latest Xbox update thread, as he was being active in it today and yesterday.

Gary, any chance of Frontier adding cross-network play between Xbox One and PC, given that it is now officially supported by Microsoft?

This support isn't simply for Xbox One and Windows 10 users to play together via Xbox Live - it's full support for *cross-network* play between people on Xbox One with Xbox Live, people on Windows ** PCs with Steam or other networks, and even other consoles...

(see http://news.xbox.com/2016/03/14/letter-chris-charla-idxbox-updates-gdc/ and http://www.rocketleaguegame.com/news/2016/03/xbox-one-cross-network-play/ )

Controller differences shouldn't be used as a reason not to do it - just give people the option to play on their own network or play cross-network (that's what Rocket League does). If people don't want to go up against kb/m or HOTAS they could just choose "Solo" or "Open - XBL" instead of "Open - XBL/PC".

The vision of the game has always been for everyone to be able to play together in the same Galaxy. The announcement from Microsoft regarding cross-play certainly helps us towards that vision, but there are many technical and infrastructure obstacles that need to be resolved.
I do feel it would be great if players had the option to play cross-platform so (as you say) they could then choose the game mode that suited them.

So long as the keyboardless Xboxers don't constantly wheeze and fart and yell at their mum/kid into their microphones the way 90% of PCers do, I'm on board. Can't see why anyone wouldn't be, there's no way to tell what platform they're on when you're killing them.

I rarely hear other players make *any* sounds in Xbox One games. Voice chat doesn't seem as common this gen as last gen - perhaps most people use Parties to chat solely with Friends, and so aren't heard by other players.
