XboxDynasty interview (German): "the team wants to support the next-gen consoles from day one"

Translation via DeepL:

The developers of Elite Dangerous: Odyssey talked to us about a possible Xbox beta, the new spacesuits and more. More or less anyway! We from Xboxdynasty had the chance to take a look at Elite Dangerous: Odyssey at the Frontier Showcase.

The developers answered a few questions about it. The short interview with Joss Herraez revealed to us that the team wants to support the next-gen consoles from day one, i.e. the Xbox Series X and the PlayStation 5. A beta would also be conceivable in the run-up, although the inclusion of Odyssey in the "Xbox Game Preview Program" is out of the question.

After all, the pre-alpha gameplay impressions shown already convinced us very much and the infinite planets were realized in an extremely impressive way. Also the "Sampling Tool" was presented. This tool absorbs data from plants and organisms and analyzes the genetics of your finds to further develop the corresponding planet profile. If you explore planets in Odyssey for the first time before all other players, you can put your personal "name stamp" on this planet again.

On the subject of "Smart Delivery" for Xbox One and Xbox Series X, we were put off for a while and were told that we would have more to say about this at a later date. The same applies to our questions about 120 fps, raytracing, cross-play and much more.

Also the question if the spacesuits in Elite Dangerous: Odyssey can be upgraded and improved to cross previously unfathomable areas on different planets was not answered with a smile.

So we were way too far ahead with our questions and hope to ask the developers of Elite Dangerous: Odyssey for an interview at a later date to provide more answers for you from the galaxy to Xboxdynasty.

"was not answered with a smile"

I know its translated, but an odd phrase.

I'm not expert, but probably along the lines: "the question wasn't answered, only a smile displayed"

In English we'd have said "only answered with a smile" as the smile is a kind of answer, but it's not a literal answer to the question.

No, the meaning is "it was not answered with enthusiasm"- its the exact opposite of answering something enthusiastically.

You mean the meaning in German? I don't read German so Ive no clue lol.

I can count to 10 though, of which I'm pathetically proud.

And in German.

Unless there is a German phrase in English not greeting something with a smile is not a positive thing. I just found it odd that was picked up on when they could have just said no comment.

This is what I mean- perhaps its been edited and changed since:

It's roughly no comment or we can neither confirm or deny, but with a strong connotation of confirm.

Yeah on my actually bothering to read the context, you could be right - they were asking questions that the devs weren't able to answer yet and it doesn't sound like devs were very enthusiastic about it, which is a bit of shame, but at least is honest. I think I'd rather that than them wink and say 'you'll find out later' if they don't actually have it set yet.

Using google translate outside of the article actually returns a different result, with the inclusion of "yet".

Even the question of whether the spacesuits in Elite Dangerous: Odyssey can be provided with improvements and upgrades in order to cross previously unfathomable areas on various planets was not yet answered with a smile.

Regardless, I'm furious about this, raaaar.

Joking aside, will we get a new thread from someone purely on the basis of this sentence? Let's see ...

Translation is fun. It's not "not [answered with a smile]", but "[not answered] with a smile". In other words, the familiar "no comment" while smiling.

dont get the console comments though. Is it released on next-gen or not? Yesterday it was said no, this suggests yes. Weird.

What are 'previously unfathomable areas on different planets' ?

To me the answer meant we have a jetpack but we aint telling you yet as the only thing I could think of was cliffs and mountains and canyons.

What upgraded suit would I need that I wouldn't just have as my 'vanilla' suit all the time?

Nice find :)

It would be pretty odd if they didn’t actually launch on next gen. A strange reboot indeed. (I guess the tight lippedness elsewhere is more to do with contracts / console schedules for title announcements / being sure they actually can etc)

I think it must have been asking about hazardous places (like NMS has, and I think SC too with snow / cold). So if you went to a really cold moon you don your wooly jumper suit and not space trunks and sandals.

Theres a whole thread where its 'confirmed' (99.9% sure) its not on XB1X & PS5 at launch. Something like 'When we do them we want to do then justice' or words to that effect. Part of the issue is PS is Sony which doesnt have same compatibility and puts onus onto developer to rewrite games for compatibility. XB have said they will do this. So at least on XB1X it will be backwards compatible at launch (99.9% sure) but almost certainly not on PS5 unless something changes.

Priority from fdev is obviously about largest customer base first PC - Current gen console - VR/Next gen console tbc/developed/finished.

Unless I overheat in the wrong suit Ill just wear the extra warm one all the time.

Actually in retrospect the 'smile' could have meant 'What unfathomable areas? It will all be easy terrain and no specific environmental dangers as such, you can do everything on foot, jetpack or SRV'

True- but FD would miss a trick regarding the need for an SRV / clever landing zone placement if everything is one suit fitting all situations bar external appearance.

But, we shall see. We've only seen three suit designs so far.
