Xeno Scanner!?

That's all we know so far. Still, I think I'll take one on my exploration ships. Mostly because if I met some xenoes and didn't bring a scanner with me, I'd be kicking myself all the way back to the nearest base.

Heh, yeah that's fair enough. It makes sense.

Yeah, that's my thinking as well. It's worth dragging it around, just in case it comes in handy later. I also have a Research Limpet Controller now too, same reason. Though I did try it out on a Thargoid Cyclops:

(That's my exploraconda, so I got a bit beaten up)

The heck now, another scanner? A research *limpet* ?

How am I going to fit all this onto my AspX... is it finally time to upgrade? But I don't have the 300 million for exploraconda...

You don't need a long jump range to be an explorer unless you are expecting to reach hard to to get to places, so just buy something with lots of module slots if you want all the extra gadgets.

Well going back to sub-40ly jump ranges is not an option, I've grown too accustomed to this sweetness!

As far as we know currently, the Research Limpets and Xeno Scanner are just for dealing with Thargoids.... but the names are generic enough, that I'm hoping their role gets expanded for additional exploration uses in the future.

The Xeno Scanner is a utility, so it's usually easy to fit one of those onto most ships. The limpet controller is just like any other limpet controller. My exploraconda now has these along with the hull repair limpet controller, and a corrosion resistant cargo rack. I'm still managing a 55 ly range with all of that installed, with a shield, AFMU, double SRV bay, and fighter bay. That's what finally convinced me to go with this ship that turns very slowly compared to my beloved AspX. :)

I think they're intending for the AspX (being one of the cheaper options) to be a good explorer, but not one that can do everything. For that, you need a really big ship.

The abysmal supercruise turn rate of Anaconda is indeed the other major factor (the other being credits) that's kept me from moving on towards exploraconda.

We'll see after this trip, though. I just turned my exploration data into credits at Jaques station, and am now floating a staggering 225 million credits in cash. With a passenger with potential 33 million cr payout on board, plus the honking to be done on my way back to the bubble, I just might be able to afford an exploratory anaconda after all.

Yeah, that's a good way to do it. A group of us made a trip out to Colonia, then Sgr-A*, then back to the bubble, and it earned us all Anacondas. I left it parked for quite some time though. But times are changing! :)

225 is enough for an exploraconda. She turns like a grandpa after Thanksgiving dinner, but your exploring, who cares? It carries all your toys and has a great jump range in case you have to speed back to the bubble or something.

Just as an update to this Cmdrs, i have posted this on general discussion too, I scanned a thargoid last night and got attacked for doing it. Hard-points stowed and no anti thargoid tech on board. I was v lucky to get out alive. I only did due to the robustness of my FAS. Exploration ships wouldn't stand a chance.

Best avoiding them.

I think I'll use my Python for visiting the Thargoids. With number of AT weapons being limited (which I totally do not understand, what is the reasoning behind this?), Python can easily carry everything Thargoid related and more.

You don't get attacked for scanning an alien, but some of them are antsy about staying close to them. Given that the scanner's range is only 500 m, you're almost guaranteed to tick those guys off. Best to keep your distance and do the passive scan only.
As a rule of the thumb, the ships that interdict you are more tolerant than the ones you find at signal sources. You know, the ones with wrecked human ships.

Depends on your exploration build, really. Even modestly-armoured ships can get away without too much damage, even the hostile aliens don't use all their weaponry at first. But if you're minmaxing for jump range, and flying a cardboard ship with the lowest thrusters and shields? Steer well clear of the Pleiades.

I've had similar experience. I've found that usually you can stay close enough to do the scan, for the time that it takes the scan to complete. As long as you back away afterward and don't get in their way, they'll usually leave you alone.

Agreed. I tried taking a "tissue sample" from several of them, which angers them pretty quickly. I managed to survive every attempt so far, four in total, using my exploraconda. It's not terribly fast or maneuverable, so I had to mostly tank the incoming hits, and try to circle around long enough for my research limpet to do its job. It might have been harder to do with a cardboard AspX or DBX, but they can also evade better than my 'conda.
