I read the faq but the forum doesn't seem to think I have the right permissions to view the post - can anyone tell me steps to sort it out?

This is a DirectX issue (I'm fairly sure). If so, all you need to do is download and run dxwebsetup from Microsoft. You can get it here: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35
Same issue, downloaded DirectX as per above and all now ok.
